A 15-year-old in Michigan can work and attend school for a combined total of 48 hours per workweek. While most schools in Michigan have 30 hours of school per week, this gives 15-year-olds 18 hours free to work each week. During weeks when school is not in session, such as summer break, they can work 48 hours.
Minors at the ages of 14 and 15 combined work and school hours can not exceed 48 hours in a workweek in Michigan. Minors also may not work during school hours when school is in session.
Here are some other laws and guidelines involving working hours for minors in Michigan:
14 and 15-year-olds may not work before 7 am or after 9 pm.
Minors between the ages of 16 and 17 may work 24 hours per week when school is in session and 48 hours per week when school is not in session.
16 and 17-year-olds may not work before 6am or after 10:30pm Sunday through Thursday, and 11:30 pm on Friday and Saturday when school is in session.
When school is not in session, minors between the ages of 16 and 17 may not work past 11:30 pm.
Minors are limited to working no more than 10 hours per day with a weekly average of 8 hours per day.
A minor may not work more than 6 days a week.
Approval may be granted for 16 and 17-year-olds to work beyond starting and ending times specified in the Youth Employment Standards Act. Approvals can be obtained online from the Wage and Hour Division. However, 14 and 15-year-olds are not allowed to work past the times described in the act.
Minor workers may not work more than 5 hours without a documented 30-minute break that is uninterrupted.
