Michigan State University company history timeline

1857

Carved out of 676 acres of woodlands less than four miles east of the state’s capitol, the college formally opened on May 13, 1857 with five faculty members and 63 students.

1873

Also on campus is the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden (created 1873), one of the oldest facilities of its kind in North America.

1888

The botanist Liberty Hyde Bailey established the country’s first horticultural laboratory at the school in 1888.

1959

Magic Johnson, byname of Earvin Johnson, Jr., (born August 14, 1959, Lansing, Michigan, United States), American basketball player who led the National Basketball Association (NBA) Los Angeles Lakers to five championships.

1964

The college became the first institution of higher learning in the country to teach scientific agriculture, and by 1964, it was officially named Michigan State University.

1979

Johnson left Michigan State after his sophomore season and was selected by the Lakers with the first overall pick in the 1979 NBA draft.

2017

He rejoined the Lakers franchise as an adviser to Jeanie Buss, the team’s owner, in 2017.

2020

After his retirement from basketball, Johnson became an extremely successful entrepreneur—his investment firm had estimated holdings of approximately $1 billion as of 2020—and a prominent HIV/AIDS activist.
