The Johnston Lab studies lipid metabolism in hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatobiliary disease in dogs and cats. The Research Assistant will contribute to data collection, processing, visualization, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of results. The candidate will help with mouse colony management. The candidate will be involved in preparing conference presentations and writing scholarly manuscripts. Duties for this position will include: * 60%: General Laboratory Support * Conduct basic molecular biology research, which includes but is not limited to cell culture and multiple assays/ techniques (RNA, DNA, and protein extraction; real-time qPCR, Western blotting, cell-function assays, ELISA, immunofluorescence staining, confocal and transmission electron microscopy, and flow cytometry). * 25%: Project Management * Mouse colony and research project management. * 15%: Data Collection and Distribution * Utilize basic computer skills to log data, conduct routine computer analysis of research data, and contribute to scholarly dissemination of data through poster and manuscript preparation.     About the Job The Center for Applied Research and Educational Improvement (CAREI), in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), is expanding our research support team with the addition of several assessment technician data collection staff. These positions are part-time hourly appointments with variable hours based on the data collection and research support needs across various projects, including some evening and weekend work to accommodate study participants. We are seeking multiple Assessment Technicians to support research and evaluation projects that focus on social and behavioral sciences, education, and the wellbeing of children and families. All Assessment Technicians receive training in conducting human participant research, as well as project-specific protocol training related to recruitment and informed consent, data collection, fidelity procedures, data entry, coding and cleaning, etc. The primary responsibility of Assessment Technicians is to conduct data collection with study participants including parents, youth, teachers and/or other providers. Data collection may take place both virtually and in-person at various locations including the CAREI office on the St. Paul campus, through home visits, as well as at partnering schools and/or community agencies. Data collection activities may include administration of surveys, behavior- and performance-based tasks, facilitating interaction tasks, focus groups/interviews, and classroom observations. The ideal candidates will have prior educational, social/behavioral or clinical research experience, as well as experience working with children, teens and/or families. The successful candidate will lead research that requires integral approaches to water cycle predictions, ecosystem management, and climate research to support decision making in mitigation and adaptation strategies in the Great Lakes region. The candidate is expected to collaborate with diverse experts in the Great Lakes science community to advance model coupling with lake dynamics, understanding and modeling of boundary-layer processes (e.g., evapotranspiration, wind wave formation), and atmospheric microphysical processes (e.g., aerosol formation, snow characteristics). We are particularly interested in candidates who can lead research on predictions and projections for precipitation, runoff, water quality, ice cover, hazardous weather events such as lake-effect snowstorms, as well as advancing understanding of historical and future changes in the Great Lakes regional climate. The successful candidate will be appointed with CIGLR, which is part of the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The project abstract is below. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing the project's research objectives, which include: Developing GenAI models to code mathematics instruction based on the seven dimensions of Belonging-Centered Instruction (BCI). Creating AI models capable of coding video-recorded secondary mathematics instruction for generating a strengths and improvement assessment to guide human-facilitated teacher coaching. Designing AI-driven learning modules that can suggest culturally relevant and sustaining instructional strategies (as well as point to examples of enactment) for supporting secondary mathematics teachers' professional learning and instructional improvement. This is a two-year appointment, with the option for a third year renewal, anticipated to start in summer 2025. The position will be based in the Eileen Lappin Weiser Center for Learning Sciences in the Marsal School of Education at the University of Michigan. The research investigator will report directly to Jamaal Matthews and Nia Nixon; however, in year one they will also spend 30% of their weekly time working with Rebecca Quintana and Christopher Quintana on their “ready to hand” GenAI tools project and 10% of their weekly time for integrated collaborative work with the center. A Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Education, Learning Analytics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or related fields. Demonstrated expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and/or machine learning, with experience training and deploying models. Strong coding skills and expertise with large language models. Deep knowledge of at least one programming language, Python, Java, C++ Experience with Machine learning and Deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX) Experience in prompt techniques, zero-shot prompting, fine-tuning, etc, using LLMs through APIs Record of independent research resulting in high-quality publications and evidence of growing citation impact. High-level communication skills and ability to represent data in various ways to communicate findings to diverse audiences. Sound interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with team members, other colleagues in the Eileen Lappin Weiser Center for the Learning Sciences, and external parties.
