Lead all laboratory activities and functions within the Microbiology Laboratory. Main responsibility consists of the testing of the routine external PCDs (Product Challenge Devices) used for the in-house steam and ethylene oxide sterilization processes, including the generation of any applicable test method and other related documents needed for the laboratory and any associated testing, IQ/OQ of all laboratory equipment, and routine monitoring of all temperature-controlled incubators and refrigerator. The Tech-Med Lab assists the Clinical Laboratory Scientist by performing routine specimen processing and analysis under direct supervision. The Technician may perform routine automated analysis, instrument checks, calibration, maintenance and quality control; under the direct supervision of a Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist on duty. Duties of Technicians also involve clerical functions such as answering telephone inquires and communicating with outside clients as well as reference laboratories utilized by the hospital.
Essential Duties:
Report directly to the CLS on duty.
Performs daily checks and maintenance.
Performs a variety of manual, semi-automated and automated Biochemical, Hematological, Microbiological and/or Blood Bank analysis on varied patient specimens, maintaining a high degree of accuracy and productivity.
Recognizes normal, abnormal and critical results and taking appropriate action as required, including appropriate considerations for the age of the patient.
Demonstrates proficiency in clerical and computer functions, for communicating results and for carrying out additional clinical and clerical duties to meet the needs of the Department.
Assures results are available within defined TAT guidelines
Communicates and interacts effectively with co-workers, guests of the Institution and hospital clinical staff.
Participates in the Department's Quality Assurance Program and continuing education sessions.
Help monitor supply levels, communicating with the supervisor for supplies that are needed, assisting in monitoring inventory, as assigned
Adheres to Safety / Infection Control guidelines using personal protective equipment as required
Willingness to take on new tasks and additional responsibilities
Displays flexibility to cover the lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
Obtains specimens from designated patients as necessary.
Maintains an English speaking environment in all work areas
Obtains blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to requests for testing by clinicians, with appropriate consideration for the age of the patient.
Receives and screens specimens with regard to acceptability as defined by established guidelines.
Responsible for processing, distributing or packaging all specimens received (except Blood Bank and Anatomic Pathology samples).
Handles all inquiries for lab results, specimen status and general information regarding the Department and its functions.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the CLS or supervisor.
Adheres to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Req High school or equivalent
Req 1 year Experience in phlebotomy in an Acute Care Facility setting.
Req Organization/time management skills.
Req Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Pref Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Chemistry (ASCP) ASCP certification.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
The hourly rate range for this position is $26.39 - $44.88. Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Student Worker - STEM Research Lab Technician. This position provides hands-on research and lab support for faculty-led research projects and course-based undergraduate research Experience (CUREs) in the department of Physical and Life Sciences. This role involves assisting with research experiments in multiple STEM areas such as microbiology and molecular biology/genetics, chemistry and physics while providing technical support to student and faculty.

Core Responsibilities:
Experimental and Technical Support
* Maintain and manage model organisms used in research, such as Drosophila melanogaster, including tasks like stock maintenance, virgin collection, and genetic cross setups.
* Set up and run molecular biology experiments (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, and sequencing).
* Prepare chemical reagents and biological media for research use in accordance with research protocols.
Research Support and Data Management
* Assist with data collection, and data logging.
* Assist with data processing and summarizing experimental data using spreadsheets and/or statistical software (e.g., Excel or SPSS).
* Maintain accurate records of lab activities in electronic lab notebooks or designated databases.
Instructional and Safety Support
* Support faculty in CURE based coursework by preparing related lab materials.
* Train new students in lab safety procedures, basic laboratory techniques, and proper equipment use.
* Monitor lab for adherence to safety protocols and contribute to a culture of safety.
Laboratory Maintenance and Logistics
* Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and internal maintenance schedules, including daily monitor of refrigerator and freezer temperatures, pH meter calibration, fume hood operation checks, etc.
* Report equipment malfunctions or other lab issues by creating work orders and coordinate repairs with the appropriate facilities or service units.
* Receive, unpack, and inventory shipments of laboratory supplies and equipment.
* Maintain glassware and consumables by washing, sterilizing, and storing properly.
* Dispose of biological and chemical waste following institutional and regulatory protocols.
* Organize and label chemicals, reagents, and supplies; update chemical inventory management systems accordingly.
* Keep the lab safe, clean, orderly, and functional for research and instructional purposes.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher.
* Currently enrolled at Nevada State in a program with coursework in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field.
* 1 year of working as a lab technician or lab assistant required
* At least one year of research experience in a wet-lab setting, including summer research programs such as INBRE- iSURF, UROP, EPSCoR, or NASA-funded programs.
* Successful completion of BIOL 300L and a Molecular Biology course is required.
* Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).
Preferred Qualifications:
* GPA of 3.0 or higher
* Completion of additional upper-division biology or chemistry laboratory courses
* Proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, and bacterial transformation.
* Currently entering junior or senior year of undergraduate study.
Work Hours:
This position will work up to 19.5 hours per week.
Hourly Rate:
$16.00 per hour.
