Smithers Cannabis Testing Services division is seeking applicants for a full-time Associate Microbiologist at our Darien, IL location.
Please Note: We may consider more experienced candidates for a Microbiologist role.
The Associate Microbiologist will conduct microbiological analysis of cannabis flower, concentrates and infused products as required by state cannabis regulatory body regulations within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. The Associate Microbiologist will be responsible for coordinating scheduling with the Laboratory Manager and conducting sample analysis. As time allows, the Associate Microbiologist will also be cross-trained to conduct sample onboarding, preparation, and extraction for subsequent chemical analyses.
Job Duties
Essential Functions:
Conduct sample analysis in accordance with validated methods and SOPs (qPCR, Petrifilm, bacterial and fungal culture methods, microscopy)
Ensure timely reporting of results to meet deadlines.
Ensure results meet all quality requirements.
Record and organize data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Maintenance and upkeep of instrumentation.
Additional duties as assigned, including cross-training to conduct chemical analyses.
Proficient technical writing skills in microbiology [written and oral comprehension, written and oral expression]. Ability to integrate observations (visual and written, discrimination) into evaluation process. College math [mathematical reasoning, memorizing]. Ability to work at a fast pace without compromising accuracy or completeness, prioritize work assignments and handle stress [high productivity].

Proficiency in documentation and procedures required by ISO 17025 strongly preferred.
Experience with spore trap analysis is a plus.

Job Description
The
Testing Personnel in Microbiology provide specimen processing, test performance
and results reporting that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and
require a degree of skill commensurate with the incumbent's education, training

Scope of Supervision - given and/or received: (quantifiable dimensions
of position):
Reports to the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant or
Laboratory Director. Performs high complexity testing only under the
onsite direct supervision of a General Supervisor.
Principal functional responsibilities:
Follows
the laboratory's procedure for specimen handling and processing including
plating/inoculating of media, enzyme assays, and or molecular testing.
Reads
and interprets all types of routine microbiology cultures, parasitology
procedures, enzyme assays and molecular testing.
Perform
other related laboratory testing in the microbiology department, including
but not limited to rapid testing, automated and manual susceptibility
testing, automated blood cultures, automated EIA testing, automated probe
and NAAT testing.
Maintains
records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in
the same manner as patient samples.
Adheres
to the laboratory's quality control policies; documents all quality
control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance
performed.
Follows
the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems
are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of
performance.
Identifies
problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test
results and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies the
General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant or

Documents

We are looking for a Microbiology Technician in 3600 Eagle Nest Dr, North Building, Crete, IL 60417 USA. Your mission will be to:
Purpose (Objective): The incumbent prepares samples for processing and maintains documentation of process to facilitate testing procedures.
Main Activities:
● Prepare sample for analysis by recording, weighing, and blending
● Write identification onto plates so that client and sample number can be tracked
● Pipette sample solution into tubes or plates according to the analysis process being performed
● Pour the agar into plates or tubes to begin the growth process
● Collect plates and place them in the incubator for the specified amount of time and temperature
● Prepare media and broth for use in pathogen testing as required
● Ensure that media and materials are prepared for the next testing sequence
● Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities
● Set up equipment and materials needed for analysis
● Read plates and tubes, as required, to determine the number of organisms in the sample
● Support corporate quality and continuous improvement process
● Perform necessary housekeeping duties in a timely manner, keeping the work areas and equipment clean and sanitized
● Must participate in cleaning schedule and maintain retain samples as required
● Adhere to all safety policies

YOUR PROFILE

Profile (required education/qualification and professional background): HS Diploma and 1+ year relevant work,. The incumbent must have a basic knowledge of science to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain accurate results. A basic knowledge of personal computers is useful to accurately enter testing data and results. A basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment. Planning skills are useful to maintain supplies of analysis materials and ensure analysis is completed within specified time.
Required skills: Time management skills, ability to prioritize samples and tasks in a fast paced environment. Attention to detail. Analytical skills are essential to complete analysis procedures and determine the concentration of the microorganism. A general knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System is required to process client data. Physical dexterity is required for manipulating samples.
Work Environment: The incumbent works in a laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory. Safety equipment of gloves, laboratory coat and eyeglasses may need to be worn depending on the testing process. The incumbent may use the autoclave daily to complete the analysis process. Continuous lifting of analysis materials weighing up to 50 pounds are necessary to transport media materials. The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position. The incumbent should be able to
detect slight variation in shades of colors.
