Job Description OnesourcePCS, LLC is looking for a full time Refractive Research Technician to support the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center & Joint Warfighter Refractive Surgery Center at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. Job Specific Duties Work Schedule Monday - Friday, between the hours of 0600-1700 Qualifications Degree/Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent as a minimum. Certifications: Basic Life Support Must possess and maintain current Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Experience: Knowledge of all aspects of refractive surgery and the pre-operative and post-operative management of refractive surgery patients. Knowledge of clinic regulations, policies, and procedures to receive visitors and patients, screen phone calls, and answer or refer questions. Knowledge of the internal organization of patient records in order to search the record to extract medical information and data relevant to patient care. Knowledge required requisitioning equipment, supplies, and services. Have at least 3 years previous experience in an Ophthalmology Department performing evaluations of refractive surgery patients to include use of a topographer, orb scan, ultrasound, A-scan, pachymeter, and Wavefront analyzer. Board Certification: None Licensure/Registration: None Duties Perform initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, and application tonometry; assist with all aspects of patient care. Evaluate triage patients needing immediate attention. Answer or refer patient questions and chaperone patient exams, as needed. Establish a sterile field and assists with minor surgical procedures including PRK and LASIK and other refractive surgical procedures. Perform ophthalmic studies including auto refraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field testing, pachymetry, specular microscopy, ophthalmic photography, potential acuity, brightness acuity, and other studies. Use and maintain an autorefractor, phoropter, auto and manual keratometer, tonopen, Humphrey and Goldman visual field machines, corneal topographer, A-scan machine, pachymeter, specular microscope, ophthalmic photography equipment, slit lamp, potential acuity meter, brightness acuity test, color vision plates, stereo vision test, and personal computers. Assist, educate, and train PRK staff, Ophthalmology Clinic residents, and other technicians in day-to-day clinic activities including organizing and maintaining exam room stocks. Assist with clinical training activities to include laser certification wet labs, optometrist co-manager certification courses, and resident educational activities. Perform Excimer laser responsibilities to include equipment and instrument inventory and upkeep. Assist with clinical research protocols to include consenting subjects, assisting with completion of required study documentation, verification and auditing of study documents, data extraction, and handling of animals in research. Be able to quickly learn new and unfamiliar technology, test equipment, and procedures being trialed for the Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program. Assist in administrative/clinical duties such as filing and answering phones. Full-time Description The Biocontainment Veterinary Research Technician in the ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 will provide general care, husbandry, and handling of the animals. May assist with select procedures in support of immunogenicity and efficacy studies. Assist with documentation of data and perform other duties as detailed in job description, or other duties as assigned. The Role: Ability to understand and practice all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), training manuals, and Biosafety and Operation Manuals. Must be willing and able to work in ABSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 facilities while wearing applicable protective clothing such as; positive pressure suits, power air purifying respirators, and/or other appropriate personal protective equipment for prolonged periods of time. Ability to withstand continuous standing and walking on hard floor surfaces. Technician(s) work prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation while inside containment laboratory. Handling and restraint of multiple laboratory animal species used in biomedical research. Assist with project support procedures such as follows: Health monitoring/assessment of animals. Appropriate sample collection/processing on multiple species used in biomedical research. Performing blood analysis using various benchtop equipment. Provide and/or prepare medications and/or treatments as needed Prepare animals for pathological evaluation, performs euthanasia, and verifies death. Provide support to pathologist during necropsy or tissue collection. Ability to communicate effectively with fellow technicians, the Veterinarian, Study Director, and/or PI. General maintenance and troubleshooting of all equipment used for project support. Cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of lab equipment. Maintain clinical and research support areas. Assist with in vitro work and equipment to include: Proper aliquoting and pipetting technique Proper use of centrifuge Ability to operate autoclave and verify sterility Accurate written and computerized record keeping of all husbandry and procedures performed. What You'll Be Doing: * Support laboratory-based research applying the latest scientific knowledge towards solving theoretical and practical problems in trauma, hemorrhage and resuscitation, immunomodulation, directed energy health effects, and craniofacial health and trauma. * Assist Government with administrative tasks, including preparation and revision of Performance Work Statements (PWS), IACUC and IRB protocols, proposals, manuscripts, report and presentation editing and review. * Coordinate the implementation of research studies, including regulatory requirements, maintenance of study records, and all activities associated with internal and external audits. * Assist Government in ordering and maintaining inventory of supplies related to research under contract. * Aid Government in market research for equipment and equipment maintenance services requirements related to research under contract. * Ensure IACUC/IRB requirements are followed. * Modify and plan research experiment schedules, procedures, and tests. * Research and collect data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures, literature research, or other means for research projects. * Maintain a clean and operational lab space. * Report on the status of research activities. * Route administrative paperwork related to scientific products. * Maintain data and records securely, including the use of an assigned laboratory notebook. * Oversee the work of entry-level contract personnel. * Write and edit material for publication and presentation. * Oversee and instruct contract personnel on technical procedures, equipment operation, and laboratory maintenance. * Schedule and coordinate research activities. What Required Skills You'll Bring: * Bachelor's degree plus five (5) years' full-time research experience in a related field, or a master's degree plus two (2) years' full-time research experience in an appropriate field. * Demonstrated ability to support laboratory-based research and manage administrative tasks effectively. * Proficiency in coordinating research studies and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. * Strong analytical skills for researching and collecting data through complex laboratory/scientific experiments. * Excellent writing and editing skills for publication and presentation materials. * Ability to oversee and instruct contract personnel on technical procedures and laboratory maintenance. Full-time Description The Sharan Lab at Texas Biomedical Research Institute is looking to hire an enthusiastic, responsible and skilled full-time Research Assistant or Research Associate. The candidate will work closely with the PI to conduct experimental projects on Tuberculosis and HIV/SIV pathogenesis in a mouse and nonhuman primate model (NHP) in the BSL3 high containment and BSL2 laboratory. The candidate is expected to keep abreast of the techniques and methods being employed in the lab, perform protocol standardizations if needed. The candidate will collect, prepare and report the results of the experiment and may provide supervision and guidance to junior technicians as needed. Work Duties: Collects, prepares, analyzes and evaluates specimens from mice and NHPs. Processes blood for PBMC collection and bronchoalveolar lavage samples from mice and NHPs. Prepares drug dosages for treatment of mice and NHPs. Operates laboratory equipment, contributes to laboratory maintenance. Orders lab supplies, keeps inventory of samples and reagents. Assists in small animal surgery and necropsies. Prepares media plates, counts bacterial CFUs. Participates in training sessions and workshops as needed. Prepares for animal necropsies: labelling of tubes, coordination with BSL3 staff and veterinarians. Assists post-docs / PI of the lab in data analysis as needed. Our Ideal Candidate: 1 - 2 years' experience in standard lab techniques such as preparation of PBMCs from blood, processing animal tissues, preparation of growth media, autoclaving reagents. Flow cytometry experience is not a must but highly desirable. At least 2 years' experience of working in a biology/ animal model/ immunology research laboratory. A bachelor's degree or higher in biology, biomedical sciences. 1 -2 years' experience in working with NHPs or small animal model in BSL3 lab setting. Strong leadership and teamwork qualities. Good communication skills. Commitment to the program for at least 2 years.
