Preserved just as it was designed by Donald Ross in 1921, our prestigious golf course draws pros and amateurs from across the country to play on a “pure Donald Ross” course that all but disappears into its natural landscape.

His first competitive round at Mid Pines came in a one-day Pro-Am tune-up ahead of the 1948 North & South Amateur at Pinehurst.
Since 1948, SJP has reached beyond the traditional barriers of race, religion, and income to serve those in need at our senior living communities in Southern Pines.
He went pro the next year and was named Head Golf Professional at Mid Pines in 1950, in part due to an arcane rule that prohibited professional golfers from receiving prize money from tour events during their first six months.

In 1954, LPGA legend Peggy Kirk Bell and her husband, Warren “Bullet” Bell, bought and restored Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, bringing with them the unique approach to instruction that lives on in each of our programs today.
He won the 1977 US Amateur Championship on a Ross course (Aronomink in Pennsylvania), and has a reputation for respecting the Scotsman’s work.
He went on the help create the Senior PGA TOUR and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.
The Sisters acquired land on Camp Easter Road in 1990 and began the development of a skilled nursing center, The Health Center, and new residential living community, Belle Meade.
Our first United States Women’s Open Championship was held in 1996, the year Annika Sorenstam took home the trophy.
2005 US Open Champion Michael Campbell celebrated his victory with Mrs.
The Coventry assisted living facility, opened in 2008 and is located between The Health Center and Belle Meade.
SJP secured a $500,000 federal grant in 2010 to have an 18-wheel tractor-trailer converted into a Mobile Rural Health unit.
St Joseph of the Pines began a Home Care Agency in 2010 to serve Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Moore and Robeson counties.
The LIFE Center in Fayetteville opened in 2011 and now has the state’s largest PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) program.
The 2013 restoration of Pine Needles' sister course, Mid Pines, will be addressed in a separate story.
Needless to say, the same logic carries over to other courses as well, as demonstrated by the restoration of Pinehurst #2, host of the 2014 men's and women's United States Opens.
The immaculate course, restored by Donald-Ross aficionado and golf course architect Kyle Franz in 2017, has drawn pros nationwide and continues to host some of the game’s most prestigious tournaments.
