Job Description
These position provides coverage for shifts as needed and is not guaranteed a set number of hours per week. This position is expected to remain active and available to support departmental operations as needed throughout the calendar year, and is required to work a minimum of 192 hours during each calendar year (equivalent to an average of 16 hours per month).
Summary of Position
The Public Safety Officer is responsible for fostering and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for the Augsburg University Community. This environment is attained through proactive patrol of the campus buildings and ground and through positive interactions with the community we serve.
Primary Responsibilities
Creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for members of the Augsburg University Community.
Provide required services to the Augsburg University Community, including: walking or driving escorts, locking and unlocking of campus buildings according to class schedules and events, and providing information and assistance to the community as needed.
Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance. Initiate and coordinate Police, Fire, and EMS response as needed.
Monitor campus activities and facilities through proactive patrol and observation.
Identify after hours' facilities issues and assist in the coordination of emergency maintenance response.
Prepare required incident reports completely and accurately for all security and safety related activities.
Regularly monitor and use critical infrastructure systems, including: CCTV systems, fire alarm panels, automation systems, alarms, access card systems, and parking enforcement systems.
All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Typical work environment is continually changing. Includes working in both indoor spaces and outdoors for long periods of time in varying weather conditions.

General Medical Requirements: As determined by OPM the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

* Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $40,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service Criminal Investigator training. A second installment of $10,000 will be paid following one year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a three-year Continued Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. (NOTE: Eligibility is limited to "Newly appointed" Federal employees as defined by 5 CFR 575.102).
Applicants selected for this position will be required to sign a CSA before being assigned to an initial training class. The CSA will commit the applicant to a specified period of employment with the Secret Service upon the successful completion of training.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

9. Patrol facility and make rounds counting and recording prisoners coming into or out of the Dakota County Jail.
10. Book in prisoners following established procedures to include, initial medical assessment, the taking of fingerprints, photographs, and collecting medical information and personal histories of new inmates.
11. Provide security for medical staff as they administer medication, including narcotics, conduct diabetic checks (blood sugar and insulin), and address other medical issues and treatment of inmates according to physician's orders and/or dietary restrictions.
12. Respond to and assesses emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts, threats to staff, fire alarms, escape attempts, contraband recovery, and medical situations by applying first aid, enforcing rules, restraining inmates, responding to calls for assistance, or by notifying proper authorities in an attempt to restore order and security.
13. Applies objectively reasonable and necessary amount of force in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy.
14. Respond to calls for assistance throughout the jail and document all incidents and facts by preparing reports on jail problems and discipline.
15. Supervise, coordinate, escort and communicate effectively with inmates in jail housing units. Process, coordinate, and disseminate all needs including, but not limited to, medical issues, courts, programs, visitation, food, clothing, inmate requests and shelter.
16. Conducts searches of inmates (pat or visual strip searches), living areas, cells and visitors for contraband in accordance with jail policy and procedures.
17. Process inmate funds according to standard operating procedures.
18. Process inmate releases to include releasing and returning inmate personal property upon their release from the Dakota County Jail and the processing of bail/bonds.
19. May supervise inmate recreational and visiting periods as well as inmate housekeeping responsibilities within the housing units and inmate worker housekeeping activities throughout the facility such as kitchen and laundry duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a secure jail, supervising inmates incarcerated for criminal activities ranging from misdemeanor to felony offenses. Climbing, running and kneeling frequently in response to code calls and inmate disturbances.
