As an Aide Trainee, you will deliver direct patient care using patient-centered approaches to mentally ill consumers; assist patients in all activities of daily living, including bathing, shampooing, oral hygiene, and eating; escort consumers to on- and off-grounds appointments; provide nursing care for consumers with risk of suicide; and respond to medical emergencies. You will also attend all trainings as directed, report all changes and incidents to the charge nurse, document changes and incidents in the consumers' chart, and act as a patient advocate so the rights of the consumers are protected.

The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
The School of Career and Corporate Training department of the college, previously called Workforce Development, is currently accepting applications for part-time day and/or evening, Certified EKG Tech Instructor.
Responsibilities include teaching students in both classroom and lab settings, to help ensure students gain the knowledge and skills required to pass their credentialing exam for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Instructors will be expected to deliver established course curriculum and lab set-up, lab safety, student monitoring, transfer of knowledge in support of certification preparation, troubleshooting classroom technical issues, and tracking equipment usage and inventory. In addition, instructors will assess students for content mastery and skills proficiency and maintain student attendance and grades in accordance with established policies. Instructors may also assist with content development and curriculum.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until needed positions are filled. Classes will be held in Roanoke on Virginia Western's main campus, with possible remote work as needed. Primary scheduling for classes includes weekday evenings and/or weekends. Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on an as needed, course-by-course, basis.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidate must be or have been an EKG Technician with at least one year of experience performing EKGs and hold a current EKG certification. The successful candidate must have experience in the healthcare field. The successful candidate must possess expert-level skills and abilities necessary to pass the EKG exam. Must possess knowledge of local and regional health care facilities and systems. Must be very detailed oriented and be able to meet set deadlines. The successful candidate will have expert skills, knowledge, experience, and education in the healthcare field needed to successfully prepare students to sit for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam through National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Must have knowledge of medical terminology, cardiology, and EKG technology. Must have experience working with computer programs, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
All Adjunct Faculty positions require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments; as well as the ability to work with adult learners of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
Additional Considerations:
Proven ability to provide instruction in accelerated formats geared towards certification exam preparation. Demonstrated track record of high level of student credential and institutional outcomes with the ability to deliver instruction in the classroom and in lab environments. Associate or bachelor's degree in healthcare or a related field and five years of work experience in a patient care setting.

General Purpose The primary purpose of your job position is to provide each of your assigned residents with routine daily nursing care and services in accordance with the resident's assessment and care plan, and as may be directed by your supervisors.
• Use the wristband or photo card file to identify residents before administering treatments, serving meals, etc., as necessary.
• Use only authorized abbreviations established by this facility when recording information.
• Report all changes in the resident's condition to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse as soon as practical.
• Record all entries on flow sheets, notes, charts, etc., in an informative, descriptive manner.
• Report all accidents and incidents you observe on the shift that they occur.
• Agree not to disclose resident's protected health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Administrator.
• Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempt to access facility's information system.
• Perform only those nursing care procedures that you have been trained to do.
• Ensure that the resident's room is ready for receiving the resident (i.e., bed made, name tags up, admission kit available, etc.).
• Greet residents and escort them to their room.
• Introduce resident to his/her roommate, if any, and other residents and personnel as appropriate.
• Make resident comfortable.
• Inventory and mark the resident's personal possessions as instructed.
• Store resident's clothing.
• Assist residents with packing their personal possessions when they are being transferred to a new room, or when being discharged.
• Transport residents to new rooms or to the receiving area.
• Assist with loading/unloading residents' to/from vehicles as necessary.
• Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
• Meet with your shift's nursing personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
• Report all complaints and grievances made by the resident.
• Participate in and receive the nursing report as instructed.
• Follow established policies concerning exposure to blood/body fluids.
• Make beds as instructed.
• Put extra covers on beds as requested.
• Measure and record temperatures, pulses, and respirations (TPRs) of residents, as instructed. Weigh and measure residents as instructed.
• Ensure that residents who are unable to call for help are checked frequently.
• Answer resident calls promptly.
• Check residents routinely to ensure that their personal care needs are being met.
• Assist residents with identifying food arrangements (i.e., informing resident with sight problem of foods that are on his/her tray, where it is located, if it is hot/cold, etc.).
• Record the resident's food/fluid intake. Report changes in the resident's eating habits to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
• Keep residents' water pitchers clean and filled with fresh water (on each shift), and within easy reach of the resident.
• Perform after meal care (i.e., remove trays, clean resident's hands, face, clothing, etc.).
• Participate in and receive the nursing report upon reporting for duty.
• Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with our established policies and procedures, and as instructed by your supervisors.
• Follow work assignments, and/or work schedules in completing and performing your assigned tasks.
• Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other facility personnel to ensure that nursing services can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
• Notify the facility when you will be late or absent from work.
• Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures governing accidents and incidents.
• Assist residents with daily functions (dental and mouth care, bath functions, combing of hair, dressing and undressing as necessary).
• Keep residents dry (change gown, clothing and linens, when it becomes wet or soiled).
• Assist residents in preparing for medical tests (i.e., lab work, x-ray, therapy, dental, etc.).
• Assist with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, lifts, etc.
• Perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures as instructed.
• Assist in preparing the resident for a physical examination.
• Check each resident routinely to ensure that his/her personal care needs are being met in accordance with his/her wishes.
• Observe and report the presence of pressure areas and skin breakdowns to prevent decubitus ulcers (bedsores).
• Report injuries of an unknown source, including skin tears.
• Observe disoriented and comatose residents. Record and report data as instructed
• Perform special treatments as instructed.
• Immediately notify the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any resident leaving/missing from the facility.
• Use only the equipment you have been trained to use.
• Report defective equipment to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse
• Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
• Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.
• Honor the resident's refusal of treatment request. Report such requests to your supervisor.
Supervisory Requirements
This position has no supervisor responsibilities
Qualification
Education and/or Experience Must possess, as a minimum, an 10th grade education
Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and
procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
Mathematical Skills Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must be a licensed Certified Nursing Assistant in accordance with laws of the state.

May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
