Millersville University began as a teacher's college in 1855.
Originally known as the Lancaster County Normal School, it was renamed the Millersville State Normal School in 1859.
Doctor Lyte entered the normal school in 1866 after serving in the Civil War and teaching for two years.

Completed in 1894, the Biemesderfer Executive Center, also known as the Old Library, is the centerpiece of Millersville University's campus.
Elegant stained glass windows from the early 1900's can be admired in various buildings across Millersville's campus.
He was a Latin professor at Shippensburg State Normal School, dean of Kee Mar College in Hagerstown, MD, and chairman of the English Department at Shippensburg prior to replacing the popular A. R. Byerly as professor of classical languages at Millersville in 1911.
After becoming Millersville State Teacher’s College in 1927, the college began offering baccalaureate degrees.
The original Miller homestead, built in 1763, is now used by Millersville University to house its police department.Millersville was incorporated as a borough in 1932 with Borough Offices located at 25 East Charlotte Street.

In September 2011, the university closed Ganser Hall for two years for renovations.
In 2012, the Washington Monthly ranked the University 68 out of 682 higher education institutions in the United States for its contribution to serve the public good -- the only one of the 14 Pennsylvania State owned Universities to rank in the top 100.
On August 26, 2013, the Ganser Library reopened as the McNairy Library and Learning Forum at Ganser Hall.
