Mills College company history timeline

1860

By 1860 they had fully recovered; they traveled to the Hawaiian Islands, where Cyrus Mills became president of Oahu College for children of missionaries and Susan Mills became a teacher in the school.

1864

Cyrus Mills’s ill health forced them to leave Hawaii in 1864 and settle in California.

1865

In 1865, missionaries Susan and Cyrus Mills (champions for equal education for women) bought the seminary and renamed it Mills College.

1871

In 1871, the school was moved to its current location in Oakland, California.

1877

The school was incorporated in 1877.

1884

Susan Mills served as principal of the seminary until her husband’s death in April 1884, when she acquired the additional duties of board member and acting president.

1885

In 1885 the school became a college, claiming to be the first women’s college west of the Rocky Mountains.

1890

In 1890 she was elected president of Mills College, and during her 19 years in that post she worked constantly to raise standards and secure recognition for the school.

In 1890, after serving for decades as principal (under two presidents as well), Susan Mills became the president of the college and held the position for 19 years.

1906

Beginning in 1906 the seminary classes were progressively eliminated.

1912

12, 1912, Oakland, Calif.), American missionary and educator who, with her husband, established what would become the first United States women’s college on the west coast.

1920

In 1920, Mills added graduate programs for women and men, granting its first master's degrees the following year.

Teaching missionaries Cyrus Mills and his wife, Susan Lincoln Tolman Mills, bought the school in 1865, obtained farmland at Oakland for the campus, and in 1877 deeded the school to a board of trustees. It began offering graduate courses in 1920.

1990

On May 3, 1990, Mills Trustees announced that they had voted to admit male undergraduate students to Mills.

In 1990, Mills became the first and only women's college in the US to reverse a decision to go coed.

2014

By 2014, we’d blazed a trail that others soon followed by introducing the first transgender admission policy in the country at a women’s college.

2017

In 2017, Mills declared a financial emergency because of declining enrollment and revenues, and laid off some tenured faculty.

2018

That September, it became the first private college in California to implement a tuition reset, announcing a 36% reduction in its undergraduate tuition beginning in fall 2018, with a goal of making a Mills education more affordable.

2021

On March 17, 2021, Mills announced that starting in fall 2021 it would transition away from being a degree-granting college.
