1867

The City of Minneapolis was incorporated in 1867 and had a population of about 5,000.

1916

The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis was founded in 1916.

1952

Formally chartered by the City of Minneapolis in 1952, the Police Reserve operated under the auspices of Civil Defense for nearly four decades.

1965

The Federation was incorporated in 1965 to represent the police officers of the Minneapolis Police Department and the Minneapolis Park Police.

1972

In 1972 the first legal contracts were made between the Federation and the city.

1989

In 1989, following the replacement of Civil Defense with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Police Reserve became a fully integrated unit of the Police Department.

2008

Chauvin shot a man who was trying to grab an officer’s gun in 2008, according to The Pioneer Press.

2012

2012 marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Minneapolis Police Reserve.

About 1 percent of complaints against police officers that have been adjudicated since 2012 have resulted in disciplinary action, according to city records.

2017

There was Justine Ruszczyk, a white woman who was fatally shot by a black police officer in 2017, and whose family was awarded $20 million in a settlement with the city three days after the officer was convicted of murder.

2020

On May 25, 2020, police officers in Minneapolis arrested Mr.

2021

In April 2021, a jury in state court found Mr.

Floyd’s rights, reached a plea agreement in December 2021 and was later sentenced to 21 years in federal prison.
