Minneapolis VA Health Care System company history timeline

1887

The Minnesota legislature authorized the establishment of the Minnesota Soldiers' Home in 1887 as a reward to the brave and deserving, and a Board of Trustees was established to manage the facility.

1921

Results: The Minneapolis VA Health Care System originated in 1921 and currently employs 5 Urologist who serve over 16,000 veterans per year.

In early 1921, the lease was transferred to the Veterans Bureau and United States Veterans Hospital Number 68 began operations.

1927

The building opened in March 1927 and by that June 520 patients were receiving treatment.

Veterans began receiving treatment on this site in March 1927.

1934

On July 7th, the original cornerstone from November 11, 1934 was opened and many artifacts were found inside the cornerstone.

On November 11, 1934, construction of Building 9 on the Minneapolis campus was started.

1946

Conclusion: Since 1946, the section of Urology at the Minneapolis VA has contributed basic science, clinical technique and evidence based medicine to the field of Urology while providing care to the nation's veterans.

1953

The facility for the Home began as Campton Elementary School and was built in 1953 during the mining boom on the North Shore.

1965

Historic achievements from the Minneapolis VA Section of Urology include the development of the Veteran's Affairs Cooperative Research Group (VACURG) which was instrumental to development of the Gleason grading system for prostate cancer in 1965.

1967

1968

In 1968, for example, the Minneapolis Soldiers' Home was licensed for 56 nursing care beds and 375 boarding care beds, the latter of which represented primarily custodial (non medical) care.

1974

Even with additions and remodeling adding capacity of over 1000 beds, a 1974 Veterans Administration survey found that the Minneapolis VA Hospital had the most serious space deficiencies in the entire VA system.

Expansion on this site continued with 36 new buildings built by the end of World War II. The hospital had expanded its capacity to 1000 beds by 1974, but still faced a severe space shortage.

1978

The Hastings Veterans Home opened on May 4, 1978.

1983

Construction began in 1983 to replace 90% of the campus buildings and erect the main Medical Center building present today.

1988

In 1988, the legislature reorganized and separated the Veterans Homes from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

1989

The school began a transformation to a Veterans Home in 1989.

1991

The Silver Bay Veterans Home opened on October 10, 1991.

1996

The two began educating nurse anesthetists together in 1996, which led to the first Doctor of Nursing Practice program in nurse anesthesia in the United States.

1997

Washington, DC: Office of Public Affairs; 1997.

2007

On November 19, 2007, the Veterans Home Board was eliminated and the duties and responsibilities were transferred to the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

2009

On July 29th, 2009 a ground breaking was held for a new 33,000 square foot addition at the Fergus Falls Veterans Home.

2011

The project was completed in 2011.
