1803 - The United States buys western Minnesota from the French as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
1825
1825 - Fort Snelling is established at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers.
1837
Michigan, the Wolverine State, joined the union in 1837.
1851
These drawings and his diary, published as With Pen and Pencil on the Frontier in 1851, provide a valuable record of frontier and Native American life.
1862
On December 26, 1862, 38 of 303 convicted Dakota Indians were hanged in Mankato in the largest mass execution in American history.
1876
Colorado, which joined the union as the 38th state in 1876, is America s eighth largest state in terms of land mass.
1889
1889 - The Mayo Clinic is founded in Rochester by Doctor William Mayo.
1952
The first successful open heart surgery was performed on a 5-year-old girl on September 2, 1952, by Doctor Floyd John Lewis and Doctor Clarence Walton Lillehei at the University of Minnesota.
1992
Bloomington s Mall of America, which opened in 1992, is the most visited shopping mall in the United States with roughly 40 million visitors each year.
1998
1998 - Jesse Ventura, former professional wrestler and Navy Seal, is elected governor.
