This position supports and advances health services research using data created and maintained by the Health Economics Program (HEP), including the Minnesota All Payer Claims Database (MN APCD), the Minnesota Hospital Discharge Database (MN HDD), and additional administrative data sources. The role is responsible for designing and producing accurate, timely, and comprehensive reports, analyses, and data visualizations that effectively communicate key findings, insights, and trends to inform statewide policy.
A primary focus of this position is the collection, analysis, and effective use of dental claims data within the MN APCD. This work requires expertise in eligibility data, medical and pharmacy claims, and hospital discharge data. Additional responsibilities include developing and maintaining dashboards created by the Health Care Data Service Center (HCDSC) and its partners; creating and implementing data quality frameworks; supporting data-sharing initiatives across the HCDSC team; administering user group activities; and preparing technical and user-support documentation.
This position also contributes to MN APCD data quality improvement initiatives by investigating, documenting, and enhancing the accuracy of data related to health care costs and spending, health insurance coverage, hospital utilization, uncompensated care, and health plan enrollment and financial statistics. The incumbent will also participate in additional projects as assigned by the Supervisor of the Health Care Data Service Center.
Primary responsibilities include:
+ Conduct and support data visualization initiatives.

**Minimum Qualifications**
Two (2) years experience in data science, analytics, interoperability, data equity, informatics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence, and data strategy, data modernization, governance and research.
Experience should also include each of the following:
+ Experience performing quantitative data analysis using statistical or programming tools (e.g., SQL, SAS, R, STATA, Python, Tableau), demonstrated through prior employment, internships, or research roles.
+ Experience developing data visualizations or dashboards that communicate analytical findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides outdoor recreation activities and manages Minnesota's natural resources to create economic opportunity and a sustainable quality of life. We are driven to find talented, innovative employees to help us carry out this mission.
The Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking to hire one (1) Wildlife Research Intern located in Madelia. Housing is available at the Research Station in Madelia, but some restrictions apply This internship is intended for students majoring in the field of Wildlife Biology/Ecology, Wildlife Management, or Conservation Biology. This position provides interns with an introduction to wildlife research and management through on-the-job training. The wildlife research intern will learn about and help implement DNR/Division of Fish and Wildlife (FAW) wildlife research and population monitoring projects, primarily upland game (e.g., pheasants and wild turkeys) and ungulate (e.g., white-tailed deer and elk) projects led by staff in the Farmland Wildlife Populations and Research Group (FaWPRG), by assisting in the collection of field data and biological samples, processing of samples, recording of observational notes, entry of data into electronic files, maintenance of equipment and supplies, and writing summaries of activities.
The intern will assist FaWPRG staff in all aspects of fieldwork, including vegetation/habitat sampling, camera trap deployment, and capture of wild game species (e.g., Canada geese, elk) for marking and radiotracking purposes. Communicating with private landowners and members of the public in a professional manner will be necessary. The work can be physically demanding, including heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) and walking on uneven terrain (including grasslands and wetlands) while transporting a backpack and/or equipment. Exposure to the elements (primarily heat, direct sun exposure, and humidity) and biting insects will also occur. The intern must be comfortable working as both part of a team and alone, often in remote locations. The position will be based at the FaWPRG in Madelia, MN with travel to other research stations and field sites. Some overnight travel will occasionally be required to meet project data collection needs. Driving will be necessary including on minimum maintenance roads and limited access areas where 4WD may be needed; field trucks are provided.
This position will be required to work a shifting schedule based on project needs, including some early mornings and late evenings, and weekends; schedules will be provided in advance. The anticipated start and end dates for this position are approximately mid-May through mid- to late August.
Current active upland game and ungulate research and monitoring projects that the intern will be involved in assisting with include:
+ An insecticide study to investigate the prevalence and concentrations of neonicotinoids (neonics) in pheasants and their grassland habitats, including: field sampling of soil, plants, and insects; and dissection of roosters and their tissues for later chemical analysis.
+ A camera trap study to estimate deer densities in the forest zone.
+ Goose banding opportunities in collaboration with area wildlife management staff.
+ Annual August roadside surveys to collect data on common farmland wildlife species including pheasants, partridge, rabbits, doves, cranes, and deer.
+ A new research project investigating the life history characteristics of elk in northwest Minnesota, including adult and calf survival, movement, and causes of mortality
**Minimum Qualifications**
To be eligible for an internship, you must meet the following requirements:
1. You must be a student at an accredited educational institution; **AND**
2. Your advisor must certify that you will either receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement. The signature of a sponsoring academic instructor is required prior to beginning an internship.

+ Coursework in wildlife management (e.g., wildlife population dynamics, wildlife habitat, wildlife techniques, ornithology, mammalogy), ecology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or related courses with a grade of C or better.
+ Experience with identifying common farmland wildlife and other game species including upland game birds (e.g., pheasants, grouse, turkeys), mammals (e.g., deer, elk, mesocarnivores, furbearers), and waterfowl.
+ Experience with reading maps and navigating with compass and/or GPS to move within and among field sites.
+ Experience with outdoor field work.
+ Experience troubleshooting and resolving problems.
+ Experience with radiotelemetry, including triangulation and homing techniques.

Join us as a Scientist I, where you'll put your love of science to work performing and overseeing projects within the wet chemistry department of our environmental testing laboratory.
What you'll do
Facilitate and support the analysis, administration, and oversight of air, water, and soil samples using standard chemistry/ biochemistry policies, programs, and practices
Clean, maintain, and calibrate instruments
Maintain detailed and organized documentation on all laboratory work
What you'll bring
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry/ Biochemistry or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
Ability to perform work in a lab or office setting, remain standing for long periods while conducting tests, work around strong smells, and wear personal protective equipment while handling samples (e.g., lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves; all PPE provided by Pace ).

This position exists to support and promote health services research in Health Economics Program (HEP) by administering the Minnesota All Payer Claims Database (MN APCD), Minnesota Hospital Discharge Database (MN HDD), and other administrative data collection and reporting activities. The focus of this position is on the collection and effective use of non-claims-based data collected in the MN APCD, leveraging expertise in eligibility data, medical claim, pharmacy claim, dental claim, and hospital discharge data. This position is responsible for ensuring data submissions are timely and complete by leading development and implementation of effective compliance, administrative, and governance practices. This position provides advanced database management and statistical assistance to researchers and user communities. The position develops complex data validation systems, descriptive statistics and quality metrics. This position develops comprehensive reference information and presentation materials showcasing HEP's data. The incumbent will participate in other projects as deemed necessary by the Supervisor of the Health Care Data Service Center.
Primary responsibilities include:
1. Lead and coordinate data management and compliance processes for the MN All Payer Claims Database, Minnesota Hospital Discharge Database, and other administrative data collected and maintained by the Health Economics Program.
2. Lead database capacity initiatives.
3. Provide data and information project support.

**Minimum Qualifications**
Two (2) year's experience in data science, analytics, interoperability, data equity, informatics, business intelligence, artificial intelligence, and data strategy, data modernization, governance and research.
This experience must include each of the following:
+ Experience managing, cleaning, validating, and analyzing complex administrative or health care datasets (e.g., claims, eligibility, hospital discharge, or similar), including assessing data completeness, accuracy, and usability.
+ Experience performing quantitative or statistical analysis to support research, evaluation, or policy analysis, such as descriptive statistics, data quality metrics, or other applied analytical methods.
+ Experience using statistical or data analysis tools (such as SQL, SAS, Stata, R, Tableau, or similar) to extract, manipulate, analyze, and document large datasets.
+ Experience applying data governance, privacy, or security standards when managing data or producing analytical outputs, including review of results to reduce disclosure or re-identification risk.
A bachelor's degree may substitute for twelve (12) months of experience; and associate's degree may substitute for six (6) months of experience.
Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
+ Ability to verbally explain and defend analytical approaches, including how data quality issues are identified, evaluated, and mitigated when working with complex administrative or health care datasets.
+ Ability to exercise independent judgment in applying data governance, privacy, and disclosure-avoidance principles, including explaining decision-making related to data access, output review, or release of summary information.
+ Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and analytical findings clearly to non-technical audiences, including describing how analyses or data products inform program, research, or policy decisions.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Experience working with all-payer claims databases, hospital discharge data, or other large, multi-source administrative health datasets, including familiarity with eligibility, medical, pharmacy, dental, or provider data structures.
+ Experience developing or maintaining data quality frameworks, metadata, data dictionaries, or validation rules that support long-term data usability and reproducibility for research or policy analysis.
+ Experience supporting or collaborating with diverse data user communities (e.g., researchers, program staff, external partners, or policymakers), including providing technical consultation, training, or user documentation
