Misericordia University company history timeline

1924

On August 15, 1924, the Sisters of Mercy established Luzerne County's first four-year institution of higher learning, College Misericordia, on nearly 100 acres of land in Dallas, Pennsylvania.

The university offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as post-master's and post-bachelor's certificates. It was founded by the Religious Sisters of Mercy on August 15, 1924.

More than 2,500 people witnessed the dedication of College Misericordia (whose name means “heart of mercy"). In September of 1924, 37 students began their studies sharing the Sisters' motto: "Mulier Fortis," representing valiant women trained in scholarship and spirituality.

1932

The school has had an athletics program since 1932, when it introduced intramural sports.

Misericordia has offered athletics programs, beginning with intramural sports, since 1932.

1999

Established in 1999, the GPP assists students entering the workforce or graduate school after graduation.

2007

Prior to August 24, 2007, Misericordia operated as "College Misericordia." The institution began operations as Misericordia University on August 24, 2007.

2011

The Shakespeare Garden Misericordia University features the only Shakespeare Garden in northeast PA and won a 2011 Greening Award from the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society

2018

Established in 2018, the specialization in public history immerses students in service-oriented study to foster independent thinking, develop strong communities, cultivate informed decisions, and inspire leadership.
