Mississippi State University company history timeline
Mississippi State University, founded as a land-grant college just southeast of Starkville in 1878, is now the city’s economic mainstay.
The new college received its first students in the fall of 1880 during the presidency of former Civil War general Stephen D. Lee, a United States Military Academy graduate.
Instruction began in 1880, and the early curriculum emphasized agriculture, business and industry, and science.
The Cooperative Extension Service was established in 1914 by the Smith-Lever Act.
Worldwide influenza pandemic begins, killing nearly 20 million by 1920.
Women students were first enrolled in 1930.
In 1932, the Legislature renamed the university as Mississippi State College.
African American track & field athlete, Jesse Owens, wins four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.
Under the provisions of the National Security Act of 1947, the National Security Council (NSC) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) were created.
In 1958 the Legislature renamed the university Mississippi State University in recognition of its academic development and addition of graduate programs.
The university was uneventfully desegregated in July 1965, when Richard E. Holmes, a graduate of Henderson High School in Starkville, became the first African-American student to enroll.
The Higher Education Act of 1965 is enacted, providing low-interest loans for college students.
The University Honors Program was founded in 1968 to provide more rigorous course curricula for academically talented students and support guest lecture series, forums, and distinguished external scholarships.
The Mississippi State University-Meridian Division of Business began operations during the fall semester of 1972 with the approval of the Meridian campus as a degree-granting institution by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.
In 2007, the School of Accountancy was renamed the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy.
President Bush signs the $700 billion Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.
In March 2009, Mississippi State announced the conclusion of the university's seven-year capital campaign, with more than $462 million received in private gifts and pledges.
