Missouri Baptist Medical Center history

In 1886 it opened as the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium.

A Nursing Training School opened in 1895.

In April 1959, the City placed the issue of a 20-year, $150,000 bond on the ballot as the first step in gaining Federal Hill-Burton Act funding.

Hospital Open House March 18, 1962

In 1978, an additional patient wing was requested.

There were a number of upgrades and improvements made to the rest of the facility during the next two years that culminated in an Open House and Dedication celebration that was held on May 31, 1981.

At that time, interests from outside corporations were entertained, and after much deliberation, the Sullivan Community Hospital was sold to HEI, a “for profit” corporation from Texas on June 1, 1984.

Over the next three years, a number of considerable investments in equipment and changes in staffing were made by HEI. On September 16, 1987, the hospital was sold to Missouri Baptist Medical Center to become a “non-for-profit” facility named: Missouri Baptist Hospital of Sullivan.

The program’s first successful adult lung transplant was on July 17, 1988.

With further changes in insurance contractual agreements, Missouri Baptist hospitals became part of BJC Health Care in June 1994.

Beginning in 1996, BJC HomeCare began the process of consolidating 11 certified home care agencies, five hospices, one home medical equipment service and three private duty agencies.

The process began with an official ground breaking ceremony on September 26, 2002.

Throughout that time, the Emergency Department, Admitting and Radiology were replaced first and opened in 2003.

As of 2006, the facility has 489 beds and 3000 employees, won several awards, and is prominent in the United States as one of nine hospitals recognized nationally for clinical trials with the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

BJC breaks ground on Progress West HealthCare Center, a new 72-bed hospital in southern St Charles County scheduled to be completed in 2007.

From build-out space in that phase, the new OB Department was completed and opened in 2008.

8 overall among 93 companies in the American Society of Training and Development’s 2009 BEST Awards (the second time the CLL has been honored by the ASTD).

In June 2010, Boone Hospital Center babies got a new home with the opening of the Labor and Delivery Unit at the Boone Family Birthplace.

During 2011, the hospital’s 90th anniversary of service in mid-Missouri, Boone Hospital Center opened its new patient tower.

Today, the program is one of the world’s largest, with surgeons completing more than 1,280 lung transplants as of July 2013.
