1800

As such, it was by 1898 the principal reserve standing behind the Regular Army. It was the late 1800's, and despite the use of Regular troops in notable instances, the organized militia under state control saw more strike duty than the Regulars in the years after the Civil War.

1870

The events of the 1870's in particular led many persons to fear another insurrection, and as a result legislation was introduced to improve and to provide better arms for the organized militia.

1877

The Missouri Army National Guard was formed in 1877.

1890

Governor of Missouri Jay Nixon is Commander-in-Chief.[citation needed] The Missouri National Guard was originally formed in 1890.

1898

The Missouri Army National Guard was formed in 1877. It was first mobilized en masse during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

1903

The Militia Act of 1903 organized the various state militias into the present National Guard system.

1920

Clerks in the Department of the Army and the Department of the Navy created these cards; the project continued into the 1920s.

1946

The Missouri Air National Guard provides airmen and units since 22 August 1946[citation needed] to meet the military and civil objectives of the Governor of Missouri and the President of the United States.

1947

The Missouri Air National Guard was established following World War II, in 1947.

1990

They were one of the first Guard units placed on alert status in August, 1990 but did not deploy until December, 1990.

1991

They eventually set up and operated the 301st EPW Camp, near the Saudi Arabian city of Hafar Al-Batin (Hotel 301). They returned to a hero's welcome back to West Plains, Missouri in May, 1991.

The Missouri Army National Guard is composed of approximately 9,039 soldiers (in the 2009 fiscal year), and maintains armories in 63 communities.
