MCRHC is a 25-bed critical access hospital, including a Level 4 Trauma Center Emergency Room seeing 3,200 visits annually. The Surgical Services department performs over 1,300 procedures annually, including specialties General Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, Urology, Ophthalmology, Pain management, and Podiatry.

JOB SUMMARY
The position functions so as to support the policies and procedures of the Emergency Services Department and the Mitchell County Regional Health Center. This position maintains the highest possible standards in order to provide the highest level of care and treatment to persons utilizing the ambulance service. This position may require staffing of ERV (Emergency Response Vehicle) and responding to calls immediately and managing patients independently. The Paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Be prepared to respond rapidly and safely to emergency in response area.
B. Critical thinking, scene control, assessment, and gaining access to injured patients (i.e. disentanglement, extrication).
C. Provides competent patient care to the above-indicated patient populations.
D. Transport and treatment of patients established in protocols per EMS guidelines.
E. Documents in the medical record and communicates pertinent patient information in a timely and accurate manner.
F. Maintains clinical duties, as Paramedic providing care appropriate to age, growth and development needs of the patient.
G. Assists nursing and support staff in patient care and participates in department quality improvement process, adapting positively to change, assisting the department in achieving identified outcomes as priorities allow, at the level trained, under the supervision of the provider, according to each department's policies and procedures.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
1. State of Iowa Paramedic, Paramedic, or Paramedic Specialist Required
2. BLS & ACLS Required
3. National Registry Certification Paramedic preferred
4. Emergency Vehicle Driving Safety course preferred
B. Experience
1. 2 years previous healthcare or Ambulance experience preferred.
C. Special Skills & Aptitudes
1. Able to deal tactfully with the public and staff and work harmoniously with other personnel.
2. Able to function independently in high stress situations and provide competent care.
3. Able to take charge and lead other crew members in patient care and all aspects related to EMS
4. Able to obtain and maintain a valid driver license.
5. If over 21 years of age; current state Driver's License in good standing and insurable
6. If over 21 years of age; satisfactory driving record in accordance with the MCEMS Driving Policy.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
A. Able to squat lift and transfer over 100 lb with assistance.

Job Description
1. Performs emergency medical care in accordance with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
Administers additional care as indicated or directed.
Reports verbally and in writing the observations and medical care of the patient in transit to receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
Provides assistance to the receiving facility staff, as requested.
Ensures compliance with infection control according to hospital policies and procedures.
Assures that patient's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy and property are followed.
2. Maintains ambulance in an efficient operating condition.
Ensures that the ambulance is cleaned and kept in a neat orderly condition, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
Decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of the patient with contagious infection or hazardous materials exposure.
Restocks and replaces used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures.
Checks that all equipment is ready for the next run.
3. Assists as needed in the hospital.
Transports patients as requested.
Assists with basic patient care needs within the scope of the EMT certification.
Teaches BLS Classes on a regular basis as needed minimum of 8 classes per year (required for full time EMT.)
4. Promotes and ensures patient and staff safety in all aspects of responsibilities.
Administers medications, treatments and procedures in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders and nursing policy, including appropriate performance of standard precautions, using two patient identifiers, and performing patient risk assessments every shift.
Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
Uses National Patient Safety Goals (for critical access hospitals) to ensure patient safety.
Implements infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, proper use of hand washing and gloves.
Follows proper procedures for wasting narcotics and disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.
5. Complies with the state and federal regulatory requirements related to the performance of Shenandoah Medical Center's operations and requirements of the SMC Compliance Program.
