Mall of America was chosen from four final proposals, and on June 14, 1989, developers and local dignitaries broke ground.
In 1996 alone, it attracted some 43 million visitors, more people than visited Disney World, the Grand Canyon, and Graceland combined.
In 1997, the mall's stores did $725 million in sales, employed over 12,000 people, and 92 percent of its retail space was occupied.
…with the airport and the Mall of America in suburban Bloomington, opened in 2004.
