Montana Technological University invites applications for a Micro-Credentials Operations Manager to lead the development and delivery of cutting-edge engineering micro-credential programs. This position will oversee multiple project teams to design advanced content in geological, mining, mineral processing, environmental, and metallurgical engineering, ensuring alignment with academic standards and best practices in online learning. The Operations Manager will manage budgets, coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, and foster partnerships to support recruitment and long-term program sustainability. We are seeking a STEM professional with strong project management experience, proven leadership of multi-stakeholder teams, and a passion for advancing innovative education opportunities for adult and professional learners.
Duties:
Oversee four parallel project teams to create or adapt advanced engineering content in four disciplines related to geological, mining, mineral processing, environmental, and metallurgical engineering
Deliver four 10-credit certificates to external sponsor, aligned with departmental standards for technical content and national best practices for asynchronous online delivery.
Authority for budget management and content delivery
Interface with multiple stakeholders, including engineering departments, external sponsor, research office, graduate school, and external advisory board
Build partnerships with external entities to establish a pipeline for recruitment and long-term financial sustainability of the program
Required Qualifications:
BS degree in STEM discipline
Teaching experience, in higher education or professional training or workshop setting
Experience in writing oral or written reports
Experience or formal training in project management
Management of grants or projects in excess of $100,000+
4+ years of experience managing diverse, multi-stakeholder teams towards specific deliverables
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD degree in STEM discipline
BS, MS, or PhD related to extractive engineering (e.g. mining, geological, metallurgical, materials, environmental, or related field)
Experience teaching STEM courses in a University setting or training modules in an industrial setting
8+ years of experience managing diverse, multi-stakeholder teams
Demonstrated experience teaching on-line STEM courses using national best practices for on-line asynchronous learning
Demonstrated implementation strategies by which to meet the needs of adult and non-traditional remote learners
Experience as a department manager leading teams of engineers
Demonstrated experience in managing $1M+ projects

Montana Technological University's Graduate School is seeking a dynamic Program Coordinator to support and grow our innovative micro-credential programs. This role serves as the primary point of contact for students and stakeholders, coordinating program support services, outreach, recruitment, and student engagement. The Program Coordinator will also

Duties:

Assist with student recruitment, including lead tracking and outreach, CRM implementation and mentoring prospective and enrolled students.

Assist with writing and administering grants to support program expansion and sustainability.

The Network Analyst III is a senior position within the team, is a subject matter expert, and functions as a primary and an escalation resource for the team. The network analyst III is expected to participate in the mentoring and development of junior staff. All network analysts support the MSU community, including end users. The Butte office of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (Montana's state geologic survey) seeks a highly motivated quantitative hydrogeologist trained in groundwater modeling techniques to develop and apply groundwater models for water resources evaluation. The MBMG's Ground Water Investigation Program studies local- to regional-scale hydrogeologic systems, with projects that encompass groundwater/surface-water interactions and groundwater quantity and quality. A primary focus of the position will be to use groundwater modeling, scripting/programming, parameter estimation, GIS, and visualization software to develop and apply groundwater flow models for water resources evaluations. Responsibilities also include aiding in project design, collecting and interpreting geologic and hydrogeologic data, and writing reports.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant group of geoscientists committed to providing high-quality data and interpretations to support the orderly and responsible development of Montana's natural resources. The MBMG is a department of the Montana Technological University, but this is a non-tenurable, non-teaching position. Application reviews will begin on October 20, 2025. Required Qualifications:
Minimum requirements for hiring levels:
Assistant Hydrogeologist: Master's Degree and 3 years relevant experience or Doctoral Degree, in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, or closely related field.
Associate Hydrogeologist: Master's Degree and 8 years relevant experience in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, or closely related field or Doctoral Degree and 5 years' experience.
Graduate-level coursework in geology, hydrogeology, and numerical groundwater flow modeling.
Applicable hydrogeologic/geologic field experience.
Demonstrated experience developing conceptual groundwater models, including water-budget estimates.
Demonstrated experience implementing conceptual models as numerical models using modern versions of MODFLOW (e.g., MODFLOW-NWT, MODFLOW-USG, or MODFLOW 6) and associated pre- and post-processing software.
Strong technical writing and communications skills demonstrated through a record of reports and presentations listed in your résumé.
Proficiency with common word-processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
A valid Montana driver's license (or ability to acquire one).

Preferred Qualifications:
Groundwater project experience from design and data collection through interpretation and publication.
GIS skills, including project creation, geospatial data analysis, and interpretation.
Experience with developing code for efficient pre- and post-processing of model inputs and outputs, particularly using Python, R, or similar languages; familiarity with Fortran is also desirable.
Experience with techniques for model calibration through parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis of model predictions, such as through PEST.
Experience using MODFLOW models with unstructured grids.
Familiarity with traditional aquifer test analysis methods and simulation of aquifer tests in numerical models.
Familiarity with variably saturated groundwater flow modeling (e.g., HYDRUS) or coupled groundwater-surface water flow (e.g., GSFLOW).
Familiarity with surface water (e.g., RiverWare), watershed (e.g., PRMS or HSPF), hydraulic (HEC-RAS), and geochemical (e.g., PHREEQC, Geochemist's Workbench, or MINTEQ) modeling.

This role is central to the success of the Headwaters Tech Hub, a U.S. Department of Commerce-designated Regional Technology & Innovation Hub focused on developing smart photonic sensing systems for critical defense, resource management, and disaster prevention applications. The EEIFC will serve as a test bed for field testing new technologies that will be developed through the Tech Hub efforts. The EEIFC includes 150-acres of undeveloped, rugged terrain on the surface and approximately 3000 ft of underground workings at the UMEC.
The Tech Hub Manager will report to the Department Head of Mining Engineering and oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of field-based technology development and testing initiatives. This includes managing infrastructure projects, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the EEIFC and UMEC.
Key Responsibilities:
• Advance the strategic development of the EEIFC as a national test bed for field-scale innovation, supporting the deployment of smart photonic sensing systems, unmanned systems, critical materials recovery, and integrated energy and environmental technologies in alignment with the Headwaters Tech Hub mission and EO 14057 goals.
• Lead and manage complex engineering and infrastructure projects at the EEIFC and UMEC, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
• Coordinate with internal faculty, students, and external partners to support research, testing, and educational activities.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to students and junior staff involved in Tech Hub projects (i.e. capstone design courses, undergraduate and graduate research projects)
• Oversee installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of advanced sensing along with mining and mineral processing-related equipment.
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental regulations.
• Manage site logistics, including heavy equipment operations, underground access, and field testing coordination.
• Maintain inventory and oversee procurement of technical equipment, PPE, and supplies.
• Serve as the primary liaison between Montana Tech, federal agencies, and industry partners in regard to the capabilities of the EEIFC and future development.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to attain one.
• Significant experience in engineering project management, with demonstrated success in leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex infrastructure or technology projects.
• Experience in mining operations, heavy equipment, and infrastructure development.
• Knowledge and experience in the safe handling and management of explosives, certification preferred.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic, field-based environment.

DEPARTMENT: Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology A non-regulatory state agency, within the Montana Technological University, The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) provides extensive advisory, technical, and informational services on the State's geologic, mineral, energy, and water resources. The MBMG is increasingly involved in studies of the environmental impacts to land and water caused either by past practices in hard-rock mining or by current activities in agriculture and industry. The MBMG is the principal source of earth science information for the citizens of Montana.

EMPLOYMENT DETAIL: Permanent, Full-Time
PRIMARY DUTIES:
This position serves as the Director of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) and as the Montana State Geologist. The Director oversees and develops MBMG programs related to its core mission of collecting and disseminating information about Montana's geologic, groundwater, energy, and mineral resources essential for responsible and sustainable resource development, as well as protecting the public from natural hazards. With offices in Butte and Billings, a budget of $ 9.5M/year, and a staff of about 75, the MBMG maintains strong programs in groundwater resource evaluation, geologic mapping, environmental hydrogeology, mineral and energy resource evaluation, data preservation, geologic hazard evaluation, and earthquake studies. Additionally, the MBMG curates one of the finest mineral museums in the Pacific Northwest, and serves as the state repository for water-well logs, groundwater data, and mineral information. The MBMG maintains organic and inorganic analytical laboratories, a mineral separation laboratory, and active GIS and Information Services divisions. The MBMG is a leader in groundwater and geologic database development, as well as in providing online digital data, maps, and reports. The MBMG also provides technical assistance to the public, state and federal agencies, and industry. More information about the MBMG can be found on its website, *************************** The Director fosters and encourages a collegial administrative/leadership style while promoting high-quality applied geoscience research that benefits the state of Montana. The MBMG is a department of Montana Technological University (Montana Tech) and thereby collaborates closely with the university's faculty, students and research groups. The Director collaborates with Montana Tech, the Montana University System, and the State Legislature to secure funding for and advance the mission of the MBMG. In addition, the Director seeks external funding beyond legislative appropriations, maintains awareness of significant geoscience research developments and applications, and integrates this knowledge with an understanding of Montana's needs so that new advances can be incorporated into long-term research planning.
REQUIRED QUALIFICAITONS:
Doctorate and at least 10 years (or a Master's and 13 years) of closely related geoscience experience.
Demonstrated administrative experience in budgeting, project management, personnel management, and program development.
Experience addressing (energy, mineral, water) public-policy issues as demonstrated in publications and in interactions with governmental and non-governmental groups, or others.
Must be either a certified professional geologist or registered engineer (or possess an equivalent professional registration) at the time of appointment (or within 3 years of appointment).
Excellent communication skills with both scientific and public audiences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to work within a university setting to foster collaborations with: Montana Tech administration, faculty and students, and Montana University System graduate schools; State and Federal agency personnel; State and Federal elected officials; a wide range of natural-resource industries and environmental groups; and the general public.
Supervisory experience with a professional staff.
Geoscience research experience as demonstrated by a record of publications, professional service, and/or scientific leadership.
Proven capacity to think strategically, build consensus, and effectively communicate scientific findings to a wide range of audiences, including policymakers and the public.
Ability to obtain financial support for research programs.
Knowledge of Montana geology and the impact of natural resource development on the state's economy.
Knowledge of state, regional, and national-policy issues related to natural resource development, and the ability to deal with issues in a manner that balances industry/developer and environmental/conservation concerns.
Knowledge and experience in review and publication of geologic maps and technical reports, and experience in issues associated with providing and archiving data, maps and reports digitally.
Experience with outreach programs that communicate technical geoscience information to the general public.
Service on state, national, and/or international committees; membership/leadership in state or national professional associations.
