Montblanc company history timeline

1906

The story of Montblanc origin began in 1906 when a designer from Berlin named August Eberstein, in partnership with a Hamburg banker, Alfred Nehemias, developed a range of simple-to-use fountain pens.

Beginning with the Rouge et Noir 1906, inspired by history, and recreated to fascinate modern sensibilities, this collection includes exclusive materials and decorations.

Synonymous with excellence in craftsmanship and design, Montblanc has been pushing the boundaries of innovation ever since the Maison first revolutionised the art of writing in 1906.

1908

By 1908, the business had established headquarters in Hamburg and was officially registered as a company.

In 1908 the company coined itself ‘manufacturers of high-class gold and fountain pens’, a phrase that still encapsulates the ethos of the company today.

1910

In 1910, the company registered the name “Montblanc” as its trademark and the first Montblanc fountain pen was introduced with a white cap.

Following changes to the team, in 1910 the “Montblanc” name was adopted for the growing company, inspired by the highest mountain in Europe that would come to symbolise the founders’ vision of excellence and their pursuit of performance, innovation and the finest craftsmanship.

1913

In 1913, the company’s emblem of a rounded white star representing the snow-capped peak of Mont Blanc became the official brand logo for Montblanc, now an icon of luxury and class.

1924

In 2006, Montblanc brought Minerva into its fold, a movement manufacturer based in Villeret, in the Swiss Jura. Its Meisterstück, launched in 1924, would become the world's most celebrated pen.

1928

In 1928, when cap bands and clips become a trend, the Meisterstuck Pens were released with the bands, but without the clips.

1929

In 1929, the Meisterstück nib was engraved with ‘4810’, representing the height of Mont Blanc which stands tall at 4,810 metres.

1930

In 1930, Montblanc designed the Meisterstuck pens with the clips attached permanently to the caps and introduced it to the market.

1935

By 1935, the lifetime guarantee for the Meisterstück was established, and Montblanc began producing branded leather pen pouches, notebooks, and writing cases.

1943

The 1943 story celebrates imagination in much the same way Montblanc does.

1952

After the war, in 1952, the 149 Meisterstück fountain pen was introduced.

1963

In 1963, former President John F. Kennedy offered his Meisterstück pen, a 149, to German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

1985

Dunhill Holding, having acquired Montblanc in 1985, was taken over by Vendôme, which subsequently became Richemont, one of the world's largest luxury conglomerates, encompassing – alongside Montblanc – such prestigious names as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Jaeger-LeCoultre and IWC.

1986

The Meisterstück Solitaire Collection was introduced in 1986.

1990

Montblanc expanded its empire into the Asian market in 1990, the beginning of their openings of Montblanc stand-alone Boutiques.

1992

The Lorenzo di Medici Patron of the Arts Limited Edition and the Hemingway Limited Writers Edition were launched in 1992.

Established in 1992, the annual Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award has been the reason for creating a new fountain pen honoring those who have contributed immensely to the arts.

While the First Issue in 1992 honored Hemingway, recent issues have included William Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy, Honore de Balzac, Jonathan Swift, Carlo Collodi, Thomas Mann, George Bernard Shaw, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, Cervantes, Franz Kafka, and Jules Verne.

1997

Now part of the Richemont Group, the company took its first steps in watchmaking in 1997, gradually upgrading production with the Profile, TimeWalker and Star collections.

2000

The Meisterstück Sports collection was released in 2000.

In 2000, Boheme was launched – the first major collection of pens since Meisterstück.

2003

2003 saw Montblanc appealing to a younger audience with the StarWalker pen collection.

2004

Engaging in philanthropy, Montblanc partnered with UNICEF in 2004 to promote the importance of the written word.

2006

100 years of Montblanc was celebrated in 2006 with exclusive anniversary editions released over the course of the year.

2009

First issued in 2009, these pens honor great figures in history.
