Montreat College company history timeline

1916

Montreat Normal School opened in October 1916.

Montreat College is a private, Christian, liberal arts college founded in 1916 and offering associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs for traditional and adult students.

1917

Having been granted a charter by the State of North Carolina in January 1917, the Mountain Retreat Association 'Managing Committee' voted in July of that year to provide buildings, grounds and equipment to the school for eight months per year.

1934

1934 – The school changed its name to Montreat College.

1934: Montreat Normal School (College Department) was renamed Montreat College during Doctor Robert C. Anderson’s tenure as president.

1945

1945: Montreat College began a four-year college for women.

1959

1959 – The college is renamed Montreat-Anderson College for Robert Anderson, the college’s first president, and his wife.

1959: After 14 years as a four-year women’s college, Montreat was restructured as a coeducational junior college and given a new name: Montreat-Anderson College.

1967

The Town of Montreat was founded in 1967 after the Mountain Retreat Association chose to give up maintaining the infrastructure of the retreat center.

1975

1975 – The college separated from Mountain Retreat Association, which operates the conference center.

1986

1986: Realizing the demands and changing circumstances in higher education, the college Board of Trustees made the decision to once again become a baccalaureate institution.

1994

1994 – Montreat starts its School of Professional and Adult Studies.

1995

Thielman continued as Pastor of the Church until his retirement in 1995.

1996

1996: The Asheville campus held its grand opening.

2001

2001: Montreat College purchased 72 acres of land with 21 buildings in Black Mountain in the summer.

2011

2011: Montreat College School of Adult and Graduate Studies opened a new campus in Morganton.

2013

July 29, 2013 – Montreat and Point University announce an agreement “to pursue a merger” of the two schools.

2013: Montreat College launched three fully online programs, offering its Christ-centered education in the virtual world.

2014

In February of 2014, Montreat’s faculty executive committee voted “no confidence” in the board of trustees.

In March 2014, after a $6 million anonymous gift, trustees decided to raise money and hire a new president.

24, 2014 – Board of trustees for Point University decides it won’t pursue a merger with Montreat College.

2015

2015 – Work begins on a number of renovation projects at the college.

2015: A $2 million athletic complex serving nine athletic teams was constructed on the Black Mountain Campus.

2015-16: Montreat College celebrated its centennial year.
