Since our founding by D.L. Moody in 1886, Moody Bible Institute has been committed to equipping people across the globe, cultures and generations to take the next step toward spiritual maturity.

1894

Moody Publishers In 1894, D.L. Moody founded what became Moody Publishers from concern over a lack of affordable, applicable Christian books.

1900

Before 1900, Moody played a significant role in fund-raising to support MBI. After Moody died, however, the institute struggled financially.

1903

In October 1903, Moody's Evening School was created.

1959

Though at first a Baptist, Perry joined the Church of God—a Pentecostal church based in Cleveland, Tennessee—and married Pearl Pinion, the minister’s daughter, in 1959.

In 1959, former Pastor Alan Redpath said of The Moody Church’s plans to engage an evolving American culture, “We’ll be located right in the heart of one of the finest [neighborhoods] of any city of America.

1968

Having a renewed sense of spirituality—following a suicide attempt—he held a worship service in his home for a small group of 12 people, most of whom were homosexuals, on October 6, 1968.

1969

His nascent church continued to meet, and in 1969 he performed the first public same-sex wedding ceremony in the United States.

1973

Perry retired from pastoral duties in 1973, when he became the first moderator of MCC, an elected position to serve as spokesperson, CEO, and primary visionary for the member congregations.

1984

He earned a diploma from Moody in 1984, a master’s degree from Moody Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in transformational leadership from Bakke Graduate University.

1985

In 1985, Moody Bible Institute started Moody Graduate School in Chicago to provide biblical leadership training.

1988

The print version of the daily devotional Today in the Word began in 1988 as a gift thanking the supporters of Moody Bible Institute and Moody Radio.

1997

In 1997, continuing the tradition of innovative education, Moody Bible Institute Distance Learning began offering a Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies degree.

2000

Since 2000, an online Associate of Biblical Studies degree and an online Certificate of Biblical Studies for graduate and undergraduate students have also been offered.

2008

After eight decades of constant expansion, Moody’s radio ministry consolidated under a new name in 2008. “Moody Radio” reflects our broadcasting heritage and our future as a worldwide media creator and distributor.

2009

In spring of 2009 Moody Bible Institute Distance Learning offered web- based Independent Studies courses for the first time.

2012

In 2012 Moody launched the fully online Master of Arts [Biblical Studies].

2017

In November 2017, the institution announced the closure of its campus in Spokane, Washington, and reductions in other programs and services in response to continued drops in enrollment.

However, professor Janay Garrick, who helped the students file Title IX complaints, found that her employment contract would not be renewed at the end of 2017.
