Moody Gardens company history timeline
William Lewis Moody, owning not much more than a law degree from the University of Virginia, ventured west in 1852 seeking opportunity and a comfortable place to settle a family.
When W. L. Jr. joined the family operation in 1886, the Moodys had already expanded into banking – first with the opening of Moody Bank and later through a merger with the National Bank of Texas.
In 1923, W. L. Moody Jr. purchased the Galveston Daily News – the oldest paper in Texas – from Alfred Horatio Belo, who also founded The Dallas Morning News.
In 1927, W. L. Moody Jr. also acquired the Galveston Tribune, the afternoon newspaper.
When W. L. Jr. passed away in 1954, Northen became his designated successor.
1986: Moody Gardens began as a horse barn with a riding arena that provided a hippotherapy riding program for people with head injuries.
1986 – Convention Center: Originally opened as Hope Arena.
Northen served as a foundation trustee until her death in 1986.
1988 – The Learning Place: Originally opened as Seaside Safari, it is now the home of Moody Gardens
1990: The production area opened, which included two greenhouses used to propagate most of the plants seen on the ground for our Medicinal Plant Program.
1999 – Aquarium Pyramid: The 1.5 million-gallon Aquarium Pyramid is a splashy tribute to the North
2004: The hotel gained a brand new 125-room wing, and the Exhibit Hall grew by 60,000 square feet.
2005: The 4D Special FX Theater opened, creating a totally new way to experience the movies.
