The Server / VMware Administrator is a hands-on, L2 infrastructure role responsible for supporting and optimizing the server, virtualization, and storage environment for a GTS Customer. This position manages a predominantly Windows Server and VMware vSphere environment, while also supporting enterprise storage platforms (EMC, Pure Storage) and contributing to future hybrid cloud initiatives. The ideal candidate is an independent, self-directed engineer who can own server lifecycle management, keep systems secure and compliant, and ensure high availability for mission-critical operations.
Server & Virtualization Administration
Operate and sustain the daily use of a VMware infrastructure, including updating, testing, and deploying vSphere and vCenter product releases.
Administer physical and virtual servers, primarily Windows Server 2019+ (and limited Linux as needed).
Manage server virtualization, server provisioning, and physical server maintenance across on-premise data center environments.
Maintain the virtualized server environment through configuration, implementation, management, and ongoing support activities.
Monitor virtual server health, performance, and utilization; proactively remediate issues to minimize downtime.
Storage, Backup & Cloud-Ready Infrastructure
Support and manage enterprise storage platforms, with emphasis on EMC and Pure Storage, including provisioning, performance monitoring, and capacity planning.
Administer and support backup systems (on-prem and/or cloud-connected) to ensure reliable recovery capabilities.
Participate in planning and execution of storage refreshes and future hybrid cloud or alternative hypervisor initiatives.
Security, Compliance & Patching
Implement and maintain continuous compliance with information security policies, technical standards, and regulatory requirements (including CJIS/TSA expectations).
Maintain security baseline compliance through configuration hardening, remediation of non-compliances, and regular policy reviews.
Apply regular security patches and software updates to servers and related infrastructure in accordance with change management processes.
Assist with incident response activities and implement containment and remediation steps during security events.
Systems Operations & Support
Perform systems administration of desktop and server systems connected to local and wide-area networks, including account monitoring, OS installation, and other local system administration tasks.
Provide support for implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of IT systems, including client/server, storage, and network-connected devices.
Manage IT system infrastructure and related processes, ensuring high availability and reliability for operations.
Provide installation and operational support for voice and data communications hardware and software as needed.
Projects, Documentation & Collaboration
Assist with integrating new technologies into existing systems, including transitions and migrations of corporate systems (server, storage, or virtualization).
Review technical requirements and provide recommendations or changes to the existing architecture to improve performance, resiliency, and manageability.
Develop and maintain documentation, including build guides, runbooks, topology diagrams, and configuration baselines.
Collaborate closely with IT leadership, network teams, vendors, and other stakeholders to support infrastructure projects and long-term roadmap efforts.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of hands-on experience as a Server Administrator / VMware Administrator or similar infrastructure role.
Strong experience with VMware vSphere/vCenter in a production enterprise environment.
Solid experience administering Windows Server 2019 and above, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
Experience with enterprise storage systems, preferably EMC and/or Pure Storage, including provisioning and performance management.
Proven background in patching, hardening, and maintaining secure server environments in line with security standards and policies.
Experience with backup, recovery, and monitoring tools supporting enterprise server environments.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and own tasks through completion without heavy supervision.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex infrastructure issues.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a public sector, aviation, transportation, or similarly regulated environment.
Familiarity with additional hypervisors or cloud platforms (e.g., Hyper-V, Azure, AWS, hybrid cloud).
