Job Title: Design Engineer Reporting To: Manager Staff, SDG Engineering Work Schedule: Hybrid - Orrville, OH Moog Space and Defense Group is the premier motion and flow control solutions provider for the following markets: satellites, human-rated space vehicles, launch vehicles, missiles, military ground vehicles, and naval vessels. Emerging areas of focus include metal additive manufacturing, blockchain for supply chain, sensor integration, and propulsion test facilities. Moog in Orrville OH is a global designer and manufacturer of high performance hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical (EM) actuators for nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, as well as for some of the most demanding industrial applications. Our naval products comply with stringent qualification requirements such as shock, vibration, low acoustic signature, and seawater corrosion resistance, while our industrial products are often designed comply with API, ATEX, or other customer specific requirements. Many of our applications are mission or safety critical. This position is for a Design Engineer in the Design Engineering group within Moog Orrville. In this role, you will play a key role in the conceptual design, analysis, development and qualification of hardware used on military and commercial vehicles and equipment. The products of Moog are generally unique for each customer and therefore most new applications require a special, tailored design. Currently, most work for the Design Engineering group in Orrville is in the development of hydraulic actuator equipment for US Navy nuclear submarines. This position offers opportunities to use a broad range of skills. Our site is relatively small, and you'll be expected to utilize multiple engineering and interpersonal skillsets, and you will also have the ability to tap into the resources and expertise of many other talented engineers in Orrville and across other Moog sites nationwide. You will be relied upon to work both independently and on a team of other passionate professionals like yourself. To be considered for this role, here's what you'll need to bring with you: * Relevant technical degree, BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology with 3 or more yrs relevant experience. Other education considered with experience. * Solid communication skills to engage with customers, program managers, manufacturing teams, and other engineering staff and personnel throughout Moog. * Strong, data driven decision making skills * Practical knowledge and/or experience with technical drawing practices and GD&T standards * 3D CAD modeling experience * Ability to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance. Preferred Qualifications: * Familiarity with military contractual requirements and specifications. * Siemens Teamcenter and/or NX software familiarity * Hands-on experience with hydraulic and other mechanical equipment strongly desired. As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the following: * This role is primarily a design engineering function, meaning the nominal job duties will support development of new equipment designs. Design Engineers in this area will be required to create engineering calculations and design reports, CAD models, part drawings, assembly drawings, test procedures and support performance of on-site and off-site qualification tests. The Lead Design Engineer (LDE) is responsible for leading design deliverables to maintain project schedule, design budget, design accuracy, and submittal completeness working in concert with a broader execution team. The LDE is charged with value added engineering to provide a quality product while driving efficiencies. The expected annual salary range for this role is $93750.03 - $137500.04 a year. Your responsibilities: Plan and manage product quality, product qualification, and design validation; Process analysis and improvement through the implementation of statistical tools and Six Sigma methodology; Lead and participate in specific production yield improvement projects; Participate and contribute in New Product Introduction Process and understand specification development and verification upon transition to production; Carry out failure analysis on customer returns and work with the customer to resolve quality issues; Partner with suppliers to carry out failure analysis and ensure supplier corrected the issues to prevent re-occurrence; Assist in training and maintenance of the site Quality Management Systems: ISO9001:2015 and the implementation of maintenance of AS9100C; Support the site's Corrective and Preventative action process including proper closure and root cause analysis; Support and where applicable conduct internal and external audits; Quality performance analysis and reporting (suppliers and customers); Lead Material Review Board and disposition of Non-Conforming Materials. Your requirements: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Industrial, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred with experience in a manufacturing and/or regulatory environment; A minimum of five (5) years' of experience will be considered. Background in Aviation, Space and Defense manufacturing environment (an asset); Formal training in statistical techniques in a manufacturing environment with Six Sigma training and certification is highly desired; Ability to take responsibility for quality of all products including assembly, testing and yields. Understanding and familiar design control processes including: design history files, manufacturing process instructions, MRB, failure analysis and corrective/preventive actions and verification testing; Knowledge and experience with continuous improvement techniques such as Lean Enterprise, Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc. is desirable; Experience with NPI process management and product quality planning is a plus. Experience working with supplier quality management is desirable; Excellent oral and written communication skills. RESPONSIBILITIES * Materials and Processes research and development of new configuration, new product and development or introduction for thermal management and gas turbine fuel systems including manifolds, valves and fuel nozzles utilizing state of the art materials and joining processes. * Subject matter expertise in heat treatment, vacuum and induction brazing, GTAW, EB and Laser welding, forgings, castings, coatings and chemical processing methods. * Support materials issues, metallographic preparation and evaluation, SEM/EDS, materials failure investigation and analysis, fatigue, stress, fracture mechanism, fractorgraphy corrosion analysis, knowledge with ability to provide support to other engineering disciplines as well as management and customers. * Thorough understanding of all metallurgical aspects of Iron-base alloys, Stainless steels, Ni, Co, Ti Al and composite materials. * Knowledge and acumen within raw material processing of metallics, ceramics and composites, additive manufacturing of materials including stainless steels Aluminum, Ni-base superalloys and non-metallics. * Interface with customers offering guidance and manufacturability on materials and process as it relates to customer systems or interface condition and environments. * Support production operation with improving process yields and reducing scrap through lab and 6-sigma driven investigations. * Write comprehensive, detailed and concise reports that include preparation and delivery in MS Office applications and deliver through stand up or vitual presentations. * Possess familiarity with AS9100, Nadcap and FAA regulations with ability to make improvements to quality management processes.
