Morgan State University company history timeline

1875

Although its original mission was to train young men in ministry, in 1875 it admitted women for the first time and began to train both men and women in teaching.

1890

The school was renamed as Morgan College in 1890 in honor of the Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its board of trustees, who donated land to the college.

1895

The school soon started training both men and women to become teachers, and the first degree was awarded in 1895.

The school awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1895.

In 1895, the institution awarded its first baccalaureate degree to George W. F. McMechen, after whom the building of the school of business and management is named today.

1915

In 1915, with a conditional grant provided by the late ^Andrew Carnegie^, the institution moved to its present location in northeast Baltimore.

1917

The College met the conditions and moved to its present site in northeast Baltimore in 1917.

1918

In 1918, the white community of Lauraville tried to have the sale revoked by filing suit in the circuit court in Towson, upset that the Ivy Mill property, the planned location of Morgan State, had been sold to a "negro" college.

1939

The College remained a private institution under church jurisdiction until it was purchased by the State in 1939 and became the Morgan State College.

1975

In 1975, the College was elevated to university status and renamed Morgan State University.

In 1975, Morgan State added several doctoral programs and its board of directors petitioned the Maryland Legislature to be granted university status.

1977

The Institute was founded in 1977 to educate students in the technical aspects of design but also educate them in the cultural aspects of urban architecture.

1988

The Center for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) was founded in 1988 to increase the number and quality of science teachers in Maryland and strengthen the quality of scientific education.

1992

2012

The central quad was also rebuilt, completed in early 2012, and includes a direct connection between the two main bridges on campus and many new bicycle racks.

2015

Lastly, the university's new Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management opened its doors in September 2015 near the Northwood Shopping Center; expanding the contiguous campus to the west of Hillen Road for the first time and housing the School of Business and Management.

2020

In 2020, MacKenzie Scott donated $40 million to Morgan State.

2021

In 2021, Calvin E. Tyler Jr. donated $20 million to endow scholarships for financially needy students at Morgan State.
