1914

The California Vehicle Act of 1914 created laws governing all things related to driving and vehicles.

California began issuing permanent license plates in 1914.

1921

By 1921, however, there were more than a million drivers and a million vehicles.

1923

In 1923, the Act was amended to create the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It authorized the chief of the Division of Motor Vehicles to appoint state inspectors and traffic officers to enforce vehicle laws.

1950

An amendment had been proposed to deal with one of the biggest phenomenon of the 1950’s – the explosive growth of the automobile.

1961

And, while those numbers increased dramatically since 1961, the DMV workforce did not.

1987

In 1987, a new reflective coating was used on all new license plates to make them easier to see at night or in poor weather conditions.

2011

DMV’s website address was added to new license plates beginning in 2011.
