MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
A student who is enrolled in a recognized professional nursing program and participated in initial clinical experience.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives direct supervision from the Unit Director/Manager, Nursing Supervisor, Nursing House Supervisor and Charge Nurse. Performs under immediate supervision work assignments, which are given at frequent intervals and checked regularly.

Provides and documents basic direct patient care commensurate with training, experience and orientation.

Keeps patient side rails up after giving patient care.

Keeps patient's needed articles within reach, such as water, tissues, etc.
Keeps patient's rooms and hallways neat and uncluttered.
Reports any changes in patient's physical or mental level of function to team leader or charge nurse.
Provides indirect patient care.
Cooperates with other team members in resupplying stock, delivery specimens to the lab, assembling new charts, delivering requisitions to other departments and running errands.
Cleaning instruments.
Answer telephone and relay messages.

Participates with the Obstetrical Surgery Team in an individualized patient care plan based on assessed needs, standard of care, instrumentation and supplies, and physician preferences in order to provide surgical assistance during obstetrical cases.
+ Provides direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse including: vital sign and height and weight measurement and documentation of both mother and infant, bathing, feeding, and activities of daily living.
+ Assists in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines.
+ Provides basic patient assistance.
+ Connects patients to clinical equipment as needed.
+ Assists the doctor with various surgical procedures such as retracting and cutting sutures as necessary.

Position Details
Provides primary clinical support to the provider, patient and their family to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient's condition. Follows up on diagnostic testing to ensure completion, accuracy, and filing of same in medical record to ensure continuity and quality of care. Promotes a clean environment. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in specific age range on their assigned clinical area.
+ Obtains and documents patient medical history, chief complaint, vital signs, and provides basic medical data base for provider, and prepares patient for examinations.
+ Provides direct clinical care as directed by provider.
+ Assists provider in performance of minor surgical diagnostic procedures and ancillary diagnostic examinations as directed by provider to facilitate accurate diagnosis.
+ Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and complete associated paperwork to expedite laboratory studies with maximum accuracy and efficiency.
+ Executes and documents ongoing patient communication, as directed by provider, prioritizes communication to the provider, responds to patient questions and requests to ensure efficient use of provider time and timely response to patients needs Administers medications and vaccines including intradermal and skin testing under the direction of a provider and per scope of practice.
+ Cleans and sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases, ensures required levels of asepsis, availability of appropriate instruments and equipment, and preparation of patient.

Job Description:
+ Assists surgeon with procedures related to the care of patient of all ages during surgical intervention.
+ Assists in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines.
+ Provides basic patient assistance.
+ Connects patients to clinical equipment as needed.
+ Practices aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setting up instrument table.
+ Actively participates in surgical Time and out and operating room briefing according to the universal protocol.
+ Identifies correct surgical site with the circulating registered nurse and surgeon before incision of operative procedures.
+ Maintains an accurate account of supplies including sponges, needles and instruments.
+ Verifies count with the circulating nurse at end of procedure.
+ Prepares, identifies and verifies all specimens obtained during the surgical procedure.
+ Disposes of linens, needles and sharps in appropriate containers.
+ Assesses wounds and applies or changes sterile dressing as instructed by the registered nurse.
+ Maintains and documents universal precautions.
+ Initiates emergency procedures.
+ Participates in the admission and discharge process.
+ Performs billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used.
+ Adheres to all policies, protocols and standards of care.
+ Performs quality control monitoring.

Our team of CRNAs at Weill Cornell provide patient-centered anesthesia for all types of surgical procedures, including cardiac, vascular, neurosurgery, pediatrics and obstetrics. Nurse Anesthetists administer general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical, obstetric and diagnostic procedures.
In addition to providing excellent care, our CRNA's also provide one-on-one anesthesia instruction for Columbia University and Fairfield University's Nurse Anesthesia Program. In April of 2018, we opened the state-of-the-art David H. Koch Ambulatory Surgery Center that has become the focal point of ambulatory surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2020, we expanded the DHK Ambulatory Center to house the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Women's Hospital. Our CRNA's have a continued commitment to providing patients with the most integrated and innovative patient care and use their expertise and top technology to consistently achieve surgical success rates and the nation's lowest mortality rate.
