Mount Olivet Church company history timeline
In 1920, an education wing was added to the south side of the church.
William Schiebel initially served as a Student Vicar and returned to be installed as Pastor on Sunday, August 26, 1934.
Mount Olivet acquired the current church property in 1953.
An education and office wing was added in 1957.
In 1958, the board of directors of Vocational Hospital in south Minneapolis, used largely for training nurses, asked Pastor Reuben K. Youngdahl if Mount Olivet Lutheran Church would be interested in assuming the $17,000 debt on their building and turning it into a nursing home.
In 1958, the congregation built a new parsonage on land adjacent to the church.
In 1960, Mount Olivet Home was dedicated.
Additional construction in 1962 expanded the sanctuary into the cemetery and added a two story south wing primarily to create additional classrooms.
In 1962, Mount Olivet established a daughter congregation, Peace Lutheran Church at 49th and Ames Street, NE. The current Pastor at Peace is the Rev.
The Church served as a gathering place for Lutherans and was the location of a worship service preceding the historic March on Washington led by the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., in August 1963.
In 1965, the original Vocational Hospital was torn down and replaced by a new three-story skilled care facility serving 150 residents and known today as Mount Olivet Careview Home.
W. O. Keeler, who became minister in 1965 introduced “Chester the Church Mouse,” a contributor to the Voice Magnified.
North Lima Senior Citizens first met at Mount Olivet UCC. In 1968, the youths organized a singing group, “The Olive Pits.”
An outdoor worship service in 1976 was at the church grove, and outdoor services continue.
The first Shrove Tuesday pancake supper was in 1979,
( 3C’s) was established in 1979.
In 1984, as a prelude to the sanctuary renovation, a handicap-accessible ramp was built on the east side of the building.
The first worship service in the newly remodeled sanctuary was Easter Sunday, 1987.
A painting and redecorating program was begun in 1994.
As the concept evolved, child care became a component, and Mount Olivet Day Services located at 5601 Lyndale Avenue South was dedicated in 1995.
A final reconstruction occurred in 1997 with the addition of an elevator, complete renovation of the sanctuary, expansion of the chancel, creation of a gathering space, renovation of the office space, renovation of and the addition of classrooms and creation of a Columbarium.
Starting in 1998, the Rev.
Doctor John F. Johnson was called to Mount Olivet in 2000 and serves as the current pastor.
In November of 2013, a new 16-bed Transitional Care Unit, offering short-term rehabilitation and nursing services, opened to meet the needs of hospital patients who required additional care and therapy services before returning home.
The largest building project in the history of Mount Olivet Careview Home began in July of 2016.
In May of 2018, construction was completed with the following upgrades to the Careview Home building:
