City/State Virginia Beach, VA Work Shift First (Days) Sentara is currently hiring a Patient Care Technician to work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital on the Med/Surg 4 West Unit. Hours/Shift: Full-time, dayshift. 7am to 7pm
4 West is a 24-bed inpatient nursing unit. We provide quality care to adult medical/surgical telemetry patients who are acutely ill or injured. We specialize in post-operative surgical patient care. The most common types of clinical conditions include:
General surgery inclusive of emergent and elective
Davinci Robotic surgery for colon, urology, and gyn surgeries
Urology including TURB, continuous bladder irrigation, stent placement
Gynecology surgeries inclusive of bladder/colon resections
Vascular inclusive of amputations, femoral popliteal bypass, fistulas
Mastectomies and variable staging of breast reconstruction
Soft tissue traumas inclusive of gunshot/stab wounds, MVAs, chest tubes
Medical population includes:
Diverticulitis, crohns, ulcerative colitis, colitis, fistulas e.g. colorectal
Kidney injury, acute and chronic
Sepsis, pneumonia, asthma, diabetes

Patient Care Technicians are unlicensed staff members who are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nurse.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent
Certification/Licensure
American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
Minimum requirements: Must have one of the following
Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, or
Successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or
National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or
National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), or
Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or
Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT, or
Current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.
Experience
One year of prior health care experience preferred.

Department/Position Overview:
Join a unit known for its great teamwork! This general med/surg unit has great engagement within the nursing team and the patient population is mostly surgical patients. Sentara Obici Hospital is a recognized Primary Stroke Center and Magnet hospital. PCT staff will see between 8 and 12 patient ratio on the unit.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. One year experience in alcohol/drug treatment, and demonstrate a basic understanding of the principles of chemical dependency recovery with direct patient contact preferred.
2. Candidates must possess the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
3. Must have valid driver's license and auto insurance (provides confirmation to be eligible for company coverage).
4. Must be able to walk within the facility and on the grounds of the facility for approximately one (1) mile per every eight (8) hour shift.
5. Able to stand continuously in increments of 45 minutes to one (1) hour.
6. Capable of administering CPR (certification provided if needed).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES
Behavioral Health Techs are integral in the overall functioning of the facility. In all instances, the Techs will interact with all patients in accordance with established treatment policies and procedures. Techs may facilitate patient orientation, as necessary.
Essential Functions:
1. Assist in luggage and body searches.
2. Monitor and occasionally facilitate the book studies and recovery meetings.
3. Must be aware of patient locations at all times, circulating around the facility on a regular basis and document hourly checks.
4. Assure that all patients follow the Bradford Program and EVOLVE schedule and are on time for each assignment.
5. Supervise and sometime facilitate patient activities as directed.
6. Assure the patients are in their rooms at the designated time in the evening.
7. Oversee med line to prevent diversion and to de-escalate situations as they arise.
8. Assist patients to and from activities, medication times and meals when unable to physically walk.
9. Assist the counselor as assigned and engage in appropriate documentation.

The Behavioral Health Technician Group Facilitator plays a critical role in supporting individuals with serious emotional disturbances (SED) by providing compassionate, hands-on care and assistance within a structured clinical environment. This position is focused on delivering direct patient care, conducting clinical assessments, and assisting with crisis intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of patients. The technician will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized discharge plans and maintain accurate clinical documentation. Through effective crisis management and patient engagement, the Behavioral Health Technician helps promote recovery and stability for patients facing mental health challenges. Ultimately, this role contributes to the overall therapeutic process by fostering a supportive environment that encourages positive behavioral change and emotional growth.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
Certification or training in behavioral health, mental health, or related clinical support services.
Experience working with individuals with serious emotional disturbances (SED) or similar populations.
Knowledge of clinical documentation standards and crisis intervention techniques.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to healthcare regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, nursing, or a related health care field.

Under general supervision, Mental Health Technicians - Overnight in our Children & Adolescence program, participate in the direct care and plan implementation for clients, as prescribed by physician and treatment teams. They support clients at bedtime and during morning hygiene, dressing and breakfast routines. They conduct and record, 15-minute health and safety checks after a client goes to bed. They provide supervision, safety, and crisis management for the client population; complete documentation of client behavior and participation in programming; adhere to the scheduled activities; role model positive, mature behavior; utilize proactive behavioral strategies to minimize client crisis and maximize success. They report to a program supervisor/manager.
