Mountain Valley Spring Water company history timeline

1871

But in 1871, Mountain Valley Spring Water Co. was the first to sell bottled water from coast-to-coast.

Lockett’s Spring Water was acquired in 1871 by Peter and John Greene, who renamed the precious resource by the name it’s recognized by today.

Its sacred source is tucked deep in the pristine wilderness of the Ouachitas, where we’ve been bottling it in glass to preserve its award-winning, mineral-rich taste, and the planet, since 1871.

1879

The Greenes sold the land and the water to W. N. Benton in 1879 – and he in turn began marketing it as a cure-all for anything that ailed a person.

1883

In 1883, Benton formed the Mountain Valley Water Company with Zeb Ward, G. G. Latta, Samuel Stitt and Samuel Fordyce (for whom the town of Fordyce and the Fordyce Bathhouse were both named) as principal investors.

1898

Martinson Coffee Company was founded in 1898 by Joe Martinson.

1902

Ownership of the spring was transferred in 1902, when August Schlafly of St Louis, Missouri, already a major stockholder in the company, and his family became sole owners.

1908

By 1908, franchise offices had followed in Chicago, Illinois, and New York City.

1921

A third level was added in 1921 to house a Japanese-themed dance hall, with accommodation for a live band.

1924

1924 - Schlafly purchased the DeSoto Springs Mineral Water Company, located at 150 Central Avenue in Hot Springs.

1966

In 1966, the Schlaflys sold the company to a group of distributors under the leadership of John G. Scott.

1987

In April 1987, Sammons Enterprises of Dallas, Texas, purchased the company and returned administrative operations to Hot Springs.

2004

Sammons sold the company in April 2004 to the current private ownership.

2008

Folgers Coffee came under the guidance of the J.M. Smucker Company in November 2008.
