MSD of Warren Township history
MSD of Warren Township company history timeline
Now encompassing an area of 19.3 square miles, Warren was half again as large before 1872, the year the communities now known as North Plainfield, Green Brook, and Watchung were carved from its landmass.
In 1873 Jacob Blimm, then the proprietor advertised a stage line from Plainfield to Mount Bethel.
By 1880, there were five school districts-- Smalleytown, Dead River, Independent, Warrenville, and Springdale, each served by a one room schoolhouse.
By 1933, when Warren finally sold its one-room schoolhouses after Central School opened, the population only reached 1,500.
The Board of Education authorized Warren Township's participation in the Watchung Hills Regional High School since 1954.
Due to the decline of enrollment within the district since 1974, both Woodland School and Washington Valley were closed and leased (all or part) to private schools.
“After the township acquired the Kirch House in 1980, volunteer members of the Historic Sites Committee saw to its restoration.
But when Route 78 finally opened to its full length in 1986, still another wave of building crested over the remaining farmland.
The district opened the Angelo L. Tomaso School (formerly Washington Valley) on September 1, 1991.

Woodland School was reopened on September 1, 1998.
Construction was completed in September 2002 that allowed for expansion of two of our schools.
