MSP company history timeline

1962

Other sites were considered, but MSP was attractive not only for its winter conditions, but also its light airplane traffic at night, and its modern-looking airport terminal, which opened in 1962.

1967

Passenger growth far exceeded projections, however, with more than 4.1 million people using the airport by 1967.

1968

The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) approved the use of the airport by Universal City Studios, and the Minneapolis Tribune announced the production on December 17, 1968.

He continued the genre in 1968 with his best-seller, Airport.

1969

The Boeing 707, star of the movie Airport, moves along the taxiway at MSP in January 1969 with the Trans Global Airlines livery.

3 Will Jones,“They Also Serve Who Only Stand…,” Minneapolis Tribune, February 23, 1969.

Ross Hunter had the hucksterism of a Professor Henry Hill when he announced that he was looking for extras, and Minneapolis-St Paul was his River City, only too willing to embrace its first Hollywood happening as a respite from everything else that was going on in 1969.

1970

The fledgling computer department, as well as an expanded administration/customer service department, moved to a site on Mansfield Avenue in Greentree, southwest of Pittsburgh. It began by renting time on other company computers during off-hours, but by 1970, substantial company growth resulted in the purchase of an in-house computer system.

1975

It was designed to serve four million passengers a year by 1975.

1976

The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria finally made the decision to establish the National Missionary Seminary of St Paul in its meeting in Kaduna in September 1976.

1977

On Mission Sunday, October 25, 1977, the seminary was opened on its temporary site in Iperu Remo.

1978

In 1978, the Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria erected the Missionary Society of St Paul as a pious union.

1985

The first member of the Society trained in the seminary, Fr John Osom, was ordained on June 22, 1985, and eleven other members were ordained the next year.

1986

In 1986, the members of the Society were sent on foreign missions for the first time to Cameroon, Liberia and the United States of America.

Construction of Terminal 2 -Humphrey began in 1986.

1989

The class will explore major global events such as the division of Europe, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the spread of the cold war into the developing world, the revolutions of 1989, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

To address this growth, the Minnesota legislature passed the Metropolitan Airport Planning Act in 1989, establishing the Dual Track Airport Planning Process.

2015

In 2015, another major capital improvement program began that would eventually bring four additional gates to Terminal 2, a 5,000-space parking ramp, an onsite hotel, and an expansion of Terminal 1’s departures lobby and arrivals level.

2017

The MSP celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2017 with many special events and initiatives.

2018

The character of the little old-lady stowaway, an Oscar-winning performance by Hayes, certainly could not happen today. (Well, except for 66-year-old Marilyn Hartman who got to London from Chicago by performing the same crime in 2018.¹³)
