MTD Products history

1952 - MTD starts the production of bicycles and toys.

In 1954, the company diversified by forming a garden-tool division in which it utilized its machine-tool expertise to manufacture mowers, tractors, snow throwers, and later, recreational vehicles.

1958 - MTD produces its first rotary lawn mower.

1976 - MTD introduces the first lawn tractors with rear discharge to the European market and the Lawnflite brand is introduced into the UK.

MTD Products strengthened its garden line in 1981 by acquiring the lawn and garden tractor operation of the Intl.

1990’s – Continuing with the goal of becoming a global supplier, MTD purchased Gutbrod AG in Saarbrucken, Germany, to better serve the European marketplace.

1991 - MTD establishes branches in France, Austria, Hungary, Sweden and Denmark.

1996 - Tractor production begins in Saarbrucken.

By 1997, MTD had annual sales of $600 million between its two main divisions and employed nearly 6,000 at its plants worldwide.

1998 - The central warehouse in Valmont, France is established.

2000’s – While expansion through acquisition was occurring, MTD engineers were hard at work designing the first zero turn tractor with a steering wheel.

2002 - As a new branch, MTD Poland expands the distribution network in Eastern Europe.

By 2004, MTD, headquartered in Liverpool Township in Medina County, was a leading manufacturer of residential and commerical power equipment for the lawn and garden industry and sold its products under the Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yard-Man, Ryobi, and Yard Machines brands.

2009 - Branches in Russia and Bulgaria are established.
