Muhlenberg College company history timeline

1848

Muhlenberg College is an independent, undergraduate, coeducational, residential institution located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is a part of the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC). Founded in 1848, the college was named to honor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America.

1867

In 1867, the college moved into Trout Hall, the former mansion of William Allen's son, James Allen, and was renamed after Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America.

Frederick A. Muhlenberg, who in 1867 became the College's first president, led the College with two purposes in mind: the education of the conscience and the cultivation of the heart.

1894

The Library Building, now the Haas College Center, was built between 1926 and 1929. It is named for David A. Miller (Class of 1894), founder of Allentown's newspaper.

1900

Football was Muhlenberg's first official varsity sport, beginning in 1900.

1905

In 1905, the college purchased and relocated to a 51-acre (21 ha) tract located in Allentown's West End, the site of today's campus.

1910

In 1910, seeing a need for evening study in the community, Muhlenberg College opened The Wescoe School and began offering adult education classes.

1951

In 1951, the first African-American graduates earned Muhlenberg degrees.

1982

Built in 1982, the Life Sports Center is the hub of athletics.

1988

In 1988, the college opened the Harry C. Trexler library, named for local industrialist Harry Clay Trexler.

The new building was dedicated in 1988, and two years later the former library was dedicated as the Haas College Center, now home to many of the College's administrative offices.

1996

Muhlenberg became the first liberal arts school to receive Hillel accreditation and foundation status in 1996, and the next year saw the dedication of the New Science Building and the Multicultural Center.

2000

The Muhlenberg Advocate, an online, twice-monthly publication, not affiliated with the college, was established in 2000.

Since the 2000 season, Muhlenberg has compiled a 66-28 overall record in the Centennial Conference, second best among all active and former members behind only Johns Hopkins University.

2004

Athletic facilities have been expanded in recent years; in 2004, a 40,000-square-foot (3,700 m) addition was built west of the field house.

2007

In 2007, the Mules again won the Centennial Conference, and received another berth in the NCAA playoffs, winning their first round game before falling in the second round.

2011

Also, as of 2011, the college's theatre program was ranked #1 in the nation and the college was chosen as one of the "Top 286 Green Colleges" in the country in collaboration with the United States Green Building Council.

In 2011, the College celebrated the successful completion of The Talents Entrusted in Our Care campaign, finishing with a total of $110.4 million.

2016

In 2016, the College released its most recent Strategic Plan, an ambitious project that involves every constituency of Muhlenberg, and celebrated the launch of The Muhlenberg Network to facilitate professional connections between students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff.

2021

The Allentown Board of School Directors discussed the proposed budget for the 2021-22 school year during a Special Finance Committee meeting on Monday evening.
