1961

On December 2nd, 1961, MBC was established in Insadong, Seoul as the private commercial broadcasting company with the name of Hankuk Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation and transmitted its first radio signal with its call letters of HLKV Munhwa Broadcasting.

1963

On 12 April 1963, it obtained a license from the government for operating regional stations in major cities (Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Jeonju) in Korea, and established a broadcast network which connects six cities including Seoul and Busan.

1969

MBC launched a TV channel, channel 11, in 1969 after building its new headquarters in Jeongdong.

1971

In 1971, MBC started Music FM Radio with a frequency of 91.9 MHz which covers capital areas.

1980

The first colour TV broadcasting was started on 22 December 1980.

1981

MBC was separated from The Kyunghyang Shinmun according to the 1981 Basic Press Act.

1988

In 1988, Foundation for Broadcast Culture, a public organization, was established as the MBC’s largest shareholder.

The next year, MBC moved its headquarters to the newly-built Yeouido Studio in 1986. It launched FM Radio, opening a new chapter in radio broadcasting the following year and successfully televised the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988.

2001

In 2001, MBC launched satellite and cable television broadcasting.

2008

On 1 August 2008, MBC America launched MBC-D, a television network carried on the digital subchannels of KSCI-TV, KTSF-TV, and WMBC-TV. The service was planned to be launched in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. by the end of the year.

2011

In northeast metro Atlanta, it aired on WKTB-CD channel 47.3, but as of 2011 is on WSKC-CD channel 22.1.

2013

In March 2013, computer shutdowns hit South Korean television stations including the MBC. The South Korean government asserted a North Korean link in the March cyberattacks, which has been denied by Pyongyang.

2014

In 2014, MBC relocated its new headquarters to Sangam.

2017

In May 2017, MBC launched UHD TV broadcasting, the world’s first terrestrial UHD broadcasting to make the public enjoy high definition services.
