Under direction from the Project Manager, the Assistant Engineer performs engineering work for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Transit Technology Group. The Assistant Engineer will support train control upgrade projects for the Muni Metro light rail system. The engineer will work on projects which modify the existing train control system, and in addition they will have the opportunity to assist in the development of a new train control system that will function on both the surface and subway portions of the Muni rail network. In this capacity, the Assistant Engineer will perform systems engineering and design for the train control system, including system integration with traffic signals and other related systems, failure analysis, project planning, testing, diagnostics, and performance analysis.
This position will provide on-the-job training which will develop the engineer's familiarity with the specific train control system and standard operating procedures employed by SFMTA in daily rail operations.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
Provides engineering support to train control capital projects involving communication-based train control (CBTC) technology.
Assists in the development of system requirements for a new CBTC system, based on engineering judgment and interpretation of operational needs.
Assesses operational impacts of train control engineering decisions and conducts performance analyses using data generated by the train control system.
Prepares, reviews, and checks routine studies, calculations, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans for a variety of engineering projects using AutoCAD and other software tools.
Conducts periodic field visits to wayside equipment rooms, control centers, and rail yards to research and document issues with various components of the train control system; conducts preliminary field studies and surveys and collects data relative to the preparation of designs and drawings; reviews and analyzes field data and results of office research to determine necessary corrective measures.
Conducts routine field inspections of train control upgrade projects in progress to ensure conformance with plans, specifications and codes; checks and records work progress at various construction sites and monitors system testing.
Gathers, prepares, and maintains engineering data, records, and reports on the train control system.
Prepares reports, contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments.
Provides written and oral responses to a variety of inquiries from other agencies, contractors, and the general public.
May exercise limited supervision over junior engineers, student engineering trainees, and related personnel.
Meets and consults with professional engineering personnel, contractors, and the public regarding engineering matters related to train control systems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
