Mayor Ethan Berkowitz company history timeline

1981

In 1981 Anchorage Police Department Corporal Shirley (Warner) Gifford attended her first annual training conference for the International Association of Women Police held in Portland, Oregon.

1990

Berkowitz, a San Francisco native, first moved to the state in 1990, where he began work as a law clerk for the state Court of Appeals.

1996

After a few years in the appellate court, Berkowitz moved on to politics and served five terms in Alaska’s House of Representatives starting in 1996.

1997

Shirley retired as the Captain of Detectives in 1997 when she was appointed to the Chief of Police position for the Soldotna Police Department.

2015

Berkowitz ultimately made it back into public office when he was elected mayor in 2015 — the third Jewish mayor in the city’s history — and is now serving a three-year term for the city of 300,000, with a Jewish population of about 2,000.

2016

She told the Daily News they had begun texting on WhatsApp in early 2016, but did not say whether their relationship had become public.

2021

Our plan is to balance these needs and give Anchorage a detailed, practical path forward for stepping down the Sullivan Arena shelter by Fall 2021.
