The Cultural Activities Coordinator, under the supervision of the Director of Language and Culture, is responsible for planning, developing and coordinating cultural events and activities that will aid in the preservation and restoration of traditional life skills, customs and Anishinaabe teachings. This position will be required to perform a wide range of difficult-to-complex administrative tasks that serve to support effective and efficient operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
Plans, promotes and coordinates a variety of cultural events and activities, powwows, ceremonies, as identified by each community.
Develops and implements a cultural curriculum integrating Ojibwe language with a variety of delivery methods to aid in the preservation of our Anishinaabe teachings.
Work with the Mary Murray Cultural Camp Coordinator to plan joint multifaceted events for youth involvement.
Develops and maintains list of appropriate resource people who are knowledgeable in traditional Anishinaabe teachings, ceremonies, language and Ojibwe crafts.
Work with cultural advisors to determine cultural presenters for events and workshops.
Encourage community involvement in cultural/educational projects and cultural maintenance.
Collaborate with other departments to provide culturally relevant programming.
Coordinates outreach activities to educate youth and adults within the seven county service areas.
Participates in partnership with schools, post-secondary institutions and tribal/non-tribal organizations which includes preparing and delivering presentations about cultural programs and opportunities.
Evaluates and assesses program effectiveness; develops and continues project development.
Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations and Tribal policy and procedures.
Reports to funding agencies, Tribal, Federal, State and local agencies and governments as applicable.
Prepares and manages annual/quarterly, monthly budgets, expenditures, budget revisions and financial reporting.
Supervises and provides guidance for departmental staff, volunteers and chaperones.
Develops departmental procedures to carry out Board approved policies.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILIITES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
Assists with writing and submitting grants to help secure additional funding for culturally related education opportunities and partnerships.
Maintains supplies for use at cultural related events, activities, camps and ceremonies.
Provides guidance and direction to Tribal departments on cultural aspects, questions and concerns.
Work with and identify resource people who will lend their special knowledge to educate the community.
May occasionally transport youth participants to other locations for various cultural activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position lifts up to 100 pounds maximum with team or dual lifting, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include frequent standing, sitting, and use of hearing, smelling, near/midrange and far vision, depth perception, color and field of vision and typing and occasional walking, carrying and lifting items for camps, ceremonies and events. Stooping, kneeling, reaching, manual handling, bending and driving. Working conditions include occasional exposure to weather, extreme cold, wet/humidity, and noise and air quality. Potential hazards include constant computer use; frequent client contact; and occasional exposure moving mechanical parts, electric shock, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure and equipment. Protective clothing and/or equipment needed to perform job include Hazards kit and personal safety equipment (masks, gloves, etc.) as well as clothing appropriate for working outside, gathering medicines, materials and other resources including cutting and chopping wood.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Associate's Degree in Native American Studies, Education, Public, Business, or Cultural Administration preferred. Certification or proven experience in Ojibwe language preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years supervisory, program development, presentation and financial administration experience preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children of all ages, tribal elders and culturally diverse community groups required.
Certification/License: Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have knowledge of mission, organization plan, and funding sources, laws, regulations and requirements of department. Must have knowledge and understanding of Anishinaabe Bmaadziwin Kinoomaagewinan (Ojibwe Life Teachings), customs, ceremonies including building relationships and learning with tribal elders. Knowledge or fluency in Ojibwe language including ability to read and write in the Ojibwe language preferred. * Plans, promotes and coordinates a variety of cultural events and activities, powwows, ceremonies, as identified by each community.
* Develops and implements a cultural curriculum integrating Ojibwe language with a variety of delivery methods to aid in the preservation of our Anishinaabe teachings.
* Work with the Mary Murray Cultural Camp Coordinator to plan joint multifaceted events for youth involvement.
* Develops and maintains list of appropriate resource people who are knowledgeable in traditional Anishinaabe teachings, ceremonies, language and Ojibwe crafts.
