GENERAL SUMMARY: Assumes a direct role in assessing, educating, evaluating and planning diabetes self-management education for patients, family and significant others. Collaborates with nursing departments, Registered Dietitians and other health care personnel in diabetes education and treatment options. Provides nursing consultation for other HMC departments as it relates to diabetes and diabetes education. Collaborates with community agencies and performs related work as requested. Develop and deliver individualized education plans for diabetes and pregnancy, encompassing nutrition, blood glucose monitoring, medication management including insulin initiation and pump therapy to minimize diabetes-related complications during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Collaborate with perinatologists and perinatal Advanced practitioners to develop and implement care plans.
Explain the potential risks and complications associated with gestational diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar during pregnancy for both mother and baby.
Provides patient/family education in either the classroom or individual setting based on identified needs.
Refers patients/families to appropriate community agencies and other resources based on evidenced needs.
Provides in-depth instruction on using diabetes devices, such as insulin meters and pumps.
Documents education based on hospital standards and in accordance with regulatory agencies for quality diabetes self-management education.
Evaluates diabetes education and patient level of education, along with behavioral goal attainment.
Communicates effectively with staff, patients, family, physicians and others in person, in writing, on the phone and electronically.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Current Michigan licensure as a Registered Nurse

Two (2) years of professional clinical experience as a Registered Nurse; preferred candidates will have at least two (2) years of diabetes education experience.
Certified BLS provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross obtained within 18 months prior to hire date or job transfer date or Certified Instructor.

Munson Medical Center's Family Birth Center houses the 19-bed Maternity Unit, the 22-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and the Healthy Futures program.
The Family Birth Center features spacious, private birthing rooms where you and your baby will spend your stay in the hospital. Your room is fully equipped with the technical equipment needed to support your birth experience. Each room is large enough to allow your family to spend time with you and your baby and practice new parenting skills with the help of specially trained nurses. To support family learning and bonding, sleeping arrangements in the room can be made for one additional adult.

Munson Medical Center is pleased to announce our 2026 Summer Nurse Externship in Traverse City for nursing students looking to enhance their academic knowledge and further develop their clinical skills through a hands-on experience with a nurse preceptor.
The Nurse Extern will be paired up with a Nurse Preceptor for this 10-week program beginning June 2026, working (3) 12-hour shifts per week. Working day or night shift on Med/Surg and Telemetry units. We are happy to be able to provide student housing during the externship period.

To be considered for this program you must be enrolled and attending an accredited school of nursing who has completed his/her junior year of a bachelor's degree in nursing curriculum (BSN) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
