Tennessee Electric Company Inc history

The work of the association expanded to include member education and communications in 1958 when John Stanford was hired as the first editor of The Tennessee Magazine.

In 1964, a new office was constructed in Woodbury.

In 1971, MTE purchased the City of Franklin’s municipal electric utility, Franklin Power & Light Company.

Provenance: Ronald E. Brewer, a representative for the Tennessee Valley Authority, donated the East Tennessee Light and Power Company Records to the Archives of Appalachia on June 15, 1983.

In 1995, The organization received its first Eastman Chemical Supplier Excellence Award and was subsequently selected for this award numerous times.

With the addition of Lebanon Electric Department in 2000, MTE’s service territory grew to serve 137,000 meters with more than 7,900 miles of line.

The Elizabethton Electric System continued to work under the Board of Directors until 2005.

On February 9, 2006, the City Council made the Elizabethton Electric System a department of the City of Elizabethton, joining three other cities in the state that are directly governed by the owning city's governing body.

2008 saw the company’s expansion into the highly specialized wind energy sector.

In December 2009, Homer D. G’Fellers was re-named President and Chief Executive Officer.

2011 saw the further expansion and growth of the company with the addition of pipe fabrication facilities and process piping projects in the region.

Beginning, January 1, 2013 Jeff Dykes assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer.

2015 saw the transition to a new corporate headquarters and “state of the art” fabrication services facility sitting on nearly 20,000 square feet of real estate in Kingsport, TN. The site was later expanded by adding increased warehousing capacity three years later.

On Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at a special-called Board Meeting Johnson City Power Board changed its name to BrightRidge.

In 2018 the company was listed in the #136 position in the ENR Top 600 Specialty Contractors rankings.
