Murray State University company history timeline

1922

On September 2, 1922, Murray was chosen as the site of the western normal school, while Morehead was chosen for the eastern normal school.

Murray State University, formerly a teachers college, was established in 1922; instruction began the following year.

Founded in 1922, the university has grown from an enrollment of 202 students to over 10,000 today.

1923

On May 15, 1923, the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled for the State Board of Education, and Carr became Murray's first president.

Murray State Normal School opened on September 24, 1923.

Murray State started operations in the fall of 1923 with eighty-seven students and eight faculty members who held classes in the local high school.

The school has undergone an enormous amount of change since that first class of 1923.

1924

In 1924, the first building on Murray State's campus, the Administrative Building, was constructed.

1925

All students lived at home or boarded with local families until the first dormitory, Wells Hall, was constructed in 1925.

1926

In 1926, the school changed its name to Murray State Normal School and Teachers College.

In 1926, Rainey T. Wells, recognized as the founder of Murray State, became its second president.

1928

Murray State University has been continuously accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) since 1928.

1930

In 1930, the name was changed to Murray State Teachers College and it was granted authority to offer liberal arts and pre-professional courses.

1948

Delta Alpha Fraternity was founded by five men on February 3, 1948, at Murray State.

1953

They also published the college’s student directory for the sixth consecutive year, and each year since 1953 they had presented a $100 scholarship to a worthy freshman.

1958

After considering several “old line” fraternities, the group voted unanimously in April of 1958 to petition Sigma Chi for a charter.

In the spring of 1958, President Woods instructed the men of Delta Alpha to seek affiliation with a recognized fraternity.

1959

After a year of concentrated and determined work on the petitioning process, 88 undergraduates and 35 alumni of the Delta Alpha Fraternity were initiated on April 25, 1959, as the charter members of the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Sigma Chi.

1966

Murray State University, located in Murray, Kentucky, was founded in 1922 by an act of the state general assembly as a liberal arts and pre-professional, co-educational, state controlled institution. It was established as Murray State Normal School and Teachers College, Murray State Teachers College, Murray State College, and in 1966 it became Murray State University.

1968

1975

The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and renovated soon after, finally being renamed to Wrather West Kentucky Museum, named for Murray State executive vice-president Marvin O. Wrather.

1979

In 1979 the university established the Mid-America Remote Sensing Center, a transfer agent for Landsat technology.
