Musicians Institute company history timeline

1980

BIT’s first director, Chuck Rainey (Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan) lays it down (c.1980). BIT was one of the first schools in the world to recognize the fundamental importance of the electric bass in contemporary music and to make it the focus of a full-time program.

1981

Here, Don Mock (GIT), Joe Brancato (PIT), and Jeff Berlin (BIT) provide a stellar backing for Robben Ford during a concert in Room “A” of the 6757 Hollywood Boulevard facility (c.1981).

1987

World Institute of Percussion (launched in 1987)

A high powered guitar quartet including (L-R) Tommy Tedesco, Howard Roberts, jazz legend/GIT visiting artist Joe Pass, and Don Mock, hang out in Pat HIcks’ office (c.1987).

1989

Vocal Institute of Technology (service mark – became inactive May 19, 1989)

1992

In 1992, new musicologist Robert Walser cited the Musicians Institute as one of the best-known schools for guitarist, one that has flourished outside the ivory tower, offering students broader professional training.

1998

UTB Video Academy (ja), Chiyoda, Tokyo, founded in 1998 under the auspices of United Television Broadcasting Systems, Inc. (ja)

2000

In 2000, two innovative programs were unveiled: the Recording Artist Program (RAP), which offered a combination of artist development, digital recording and music business skills; and the Guitar Craft Academy (GCA), which taught the skills of building and maintaining electric guitars and basses.

2001

Tricycle Records, Inc., founded as a California corporation in 2001, dissolved — Hisatake Shibuya, President

2002

In 2002, the Music Business Program (MBP) was established to train both musicians and non-musicians in the career skills required for the business side of the industry.

2003

Hollywood Pop Academy, Inc., founded in 2003 as a California corporation, no longer active — Hisatake Shibuya, President

2007

On 25 August 2007, the Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution declaring 25 August 2007, "Musicians Institute Day in the City of Los Angeles" in recognition of its achievements over three decades during its 30th anniversary celebration.

2009

The Institute of International Education, in its assessment of "Top 40 Specialized Institutions, 2009/10," from its publication, International Students: Leading Institutions by Institutional Type, ranked Musicians Institute 13 in the United States out of 40.

2013

December 2013, The ESP Company, LTD, unveiled plans to expand its Campus Hollywood complex of schools in Los Angeles.

2018
