Muskingum University company history timeline

1837

On April 24, 1837, Muskingum College opened.

1854

Women were first enrolled in 1854.

1870

Harper’s interest in Hebraic studies began in Muskingum College, New Concord, from which he graduated in 1870.

1875

In 1875, when only 19 years of age, he received a Ph.D. at Yale for studies in the Indo-Iranian and Semitic languages.

1877

In 1877, the College became formally associated with the Synod of Ohio of the United Presbyterian Church.

1880

In 1880, after several years of academy teaching, he was given a professorship in Hebrew at the Baptist Union Theological Seminary near Chicago.

1891

In 1891 Harper became president of the newly established University of Chicago.

1958

In 1958, the United Presbyterian Church of North America and the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America merged by signing a historic agreement in Brown Chapel on Muskingum's campus.
