Mutual of Omaha company history timeline

1909

Mutual of Omaha was founded in 1909 by a medical student at Omaha's Creighton University and his wife, Doctor C.C. Criss and Mabel Criss.

1932

The company’s first president is Harry S. Weller, who serves until 1932.

1950

Jack Weekly is elected chairman and CEO, capping a career with the company that began with an entry-level data processing position in 1950.

1955

Increasing Mutual of Omaha’s wealth of products to protect consumers, the company acquires Tele-Trip Company in August 1955.

On the forefront of technology, Mutual becomes the first health and accident company to order an IBM electronic data processing system, in 1955.

1963

In 1963, the company began sponsoring Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, a wildlife program hosted by Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler that remained on television for more than 20 years.

1966

The company was one of the first companies to provide disability insurance to non-professional workers, and in 1966 was among the first companies to provide supplementary coverage for people enrolled in Medicare.

2009

The million-square-foot development, Midtown Crossing, opens in 2009.

2015

The initial application launched in seven states and will be made available in all states throughout 2015.

2017

Mutual of Omaha launched its "Begin by Listening" advertising campaign in May 2017.

2020

As of 2020, Mutual of Omaha holds the 300th rank on Fortune 500's top companies.
