Myers Tire Supply company history timeline

1933

In 1933, Meyer and Louis Myers opened Myers Tire Supply in Akron, OH. In the early years, they lived by a humble commitment: “Everything for the Tire Dealer.” Almost a full century later, that “everything” has taken on a whole new meaning, and the “for” has evolved impressively.

1933 Louis and Meyer Myers form a partnership called Myers Tire Supply, which serves as the origin of Myers Industries, Inc.

1937

In the ensuing decades, this core interest expanded into a full-scale, nationwide distribution operation offering, as the corporate slogan stated, "Everything for the Tire Dealer." Its catalog, launched in 1937, soon became known as the "bible" of the retreading industry.

1946

1946 Manufacturing of plastic and rubber products begins with the founding of Akro-Mils and Patch Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.

1947

Myers diversified into the manufacture of rubber and plastic products via the 1947 creation of Akro-Mills Inc. and Patch Rubber Co.

1955

The growing family firm incorporated in 1955.

1963

In 1963, Myers Tire Supply's central warehouse is built in Akron, Ohio.

1964

It began manufacturing its own products in 1964 and would later expand overseas.

1968

Myers acquired Cleveland's James C. Heintz Company, a high-ranking manufacturer of molds, presses, rims, and parts for tire and retread makers, in 1968.

1969

In 1969, Myers acquired Elrick Industries, Inc., a manufacturer of curing rims and tire-changing stands headquartered in Oakland, California.

Co-founder Meyer Myers retired from the company in 1969, and partner Isidore divested his stake to pursue real estate development in California.

1971

Myers Industries has been traded publicly since 1971 and is listed on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol MYE."

The company made its initial public offering in 1971, when the Myers family sold a minority stake in the firm to the public.

1978

Founded in Akron and moved to North Carolina in 1978, Patch would grow to become one of the country's biggest producers of tire repair kits.

1980

Having logged more than a dozen years of experience at the family firm, Stephen L. Myers, son of Louis Myers, advanced to president and CEO in 1980.

1983

Myers Industries was listed on the American Stock Exchange in 1983.

1987

The thirty-something executive guided the company's 1987 acquisition of Buckhorn, Inc., an Ohio-based manufacturer of multi-use plastic containers.

1992

In 1992, the company acquired Alpha Technical Systems (renamed Myers Systems), an Ohio-based manufacturer of material handling systems like conveyors and hoists.

1993

In 1993, analysts with Smith Barney Shearson described it as "a tightly managed company with a focus on disciplined, long-term growth."

1995

The company planned annual investments of $15 to $20 million in increased manufacturing capacity, efficiency programs, and product development in each of the years from 1995 to the end of the century.

1998

1998 Myers acquires Danish company Raaco International, which offers products similar to its Akro-Mils brand storage and organization products.

1999

1999 Myers acquires Dillen Products and Listo Products, both manufacturers of plastic flower containers.

2001

2001 Myers is listed on the New York Stock Exchange on May 1st (symbol MYE).

2004

2004 Myers acquires Productivity California, Inc. (Pro Cal), a leading manufacturer of nursery containers for the professional grower.

2007

2007 Myers divests the European Material Handling segment.

2007 Myers acquires ITML Horticulture Products and adds it to its Lawn & Garden segment.

2012

2012 Myers is named one of America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies in a survey by Forbes, an honor based on sound management, financial reporting practices, and strong corporate governance.

2012 Myers acquires Jamco Products, a leading designer and manufacturer of heavy-duty industrial steel carts and safety cabinets used across many markets, complementing its Akro-Mils business.

2013

2013 For the second year in a row, Myers is named one of America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies in an annual survey commissioned by Forbes.

2014

2014 Myers acquires Scepter, an industry-leading manufacturer of portable marine fuel containers, portable fuel and water containers and accessories, ammunition containers, storage totes, and environmental bins.

2015

2015 Myers completes the sale of its Lawn & Garden business.

2019

2019 Myers acquires Tuffy Manufacturing Inc., a warehouse distributor of tire repair equipment and supplies, for $18 million.

2020

2020 Myers acquires Elkhart Plastics, Inc., one of the largest rotational molding companies in the United States.

2021

2021 Myers acquires Trilogy Plastics, a world-class custom rotational molder specializing in high quality, high tolerance parts and assemblies.
