Mystic Aquarium company history timeline

1973

October 6, 1973Mystic Marinelife Aquarium was founded in 1973 to serve as a living laboratory and major public exhibit, highlighting some of the most intriguing species in the world.

Mystic Aquarium was first opened in 1973 as a privately owned corporation.

1979

The building, grounds and other assets were contributed to the foundation on May 1, 1979.

1985

The exhibit was created by Ballard, who found the Titanic in 1985, and Tim Delaney, a former Walt Disney Imagineer.

1998

1998-99A large renovation and expansion included the Ocean Planet Pavilion, main exhibit floor, gift shop, Penguins Café, Aquatic Animal Study Center, Challenge of the Deep and Arctic Coast, one of the largest outdoor beluga exhibits in the nation.

1999

In 1999, the aquarium and Ballard's Institute for Exploration combined to form a $52 million expansion.

2012

The aquarium opened Titanic – 12,450 Feet Below on April 12, 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

2015

The Titanic exhibit was also remodeled into a new 7,000 sq ft (650 m) exhibit named Exploration: Wild in 2015, after Ballard ended his association with the aquarium.
